There are a number of steroid-based treatments available for certain hair loss conditions. Generally these are recommended for the treatment of Alopecia Areata as well as the more severe forms: Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Universalis.
Steroid treatments for alopecia can be divided into three main categories, details of which are listed below.
Steroid injections aim to first prevent the immune system from attacking hair follicles, then trigger hair regrowth in alopecia patients. They tend to work best in those who have small patches of hair loss.
Each treatment involves having a number of injections which deliver a corticosteroid solution directly into the scalp. It may be necessary to repeat this treatment every few months.
In addition to being an uncomfortable, painful experience, the long-term side effects of steroid injections can include premature balding.
Steroid formulations that can be applied directly to the scalp are widely prescribed for the treatment of alopecia. These can come in various forms, including lotion, gel or foam and the main types of corticosteroids delivered through these treatments are:
Although topical steroids are popular for treating alopecia, largely because they can easily be applied directly to the affected areas and some patients may see regrowth from them, their long term benefits are unknown.
There are also various side effects associated with their use, such as acne and thinning of the skin.
Corticosteroid tablets are no longer recommended for the treatment of alopecia, as they pose a risk of serious side effects including diabetes and stomach ulcers.
Belgravia’s most popular alopecia areata treatment is high strength minoxidil which can also be combined with various hair growth boosters for an holistic approach to treatment. This topical formula is applied directly to the scalp wherever it is needed.
