‘Why Am I Losing More Hair After Just Starting Minoxidil?’

HairlossANSWERS - Click to Submit Your Query to Our Hair Loss Experts

Name: Jodie

Question: I just started using the minoxidil hair loss treatment for my hereditary hair loss about six weeks ago but now my hair is falling out more than before! Is this normal? What should I do? I am worried about losing more hair and am not sure if this is meant to happen or if it’s not working. Please help.

Minoxidil DropperAnswer: Hi Jodie. This is one of the most frequent questions Belgravia clients – both men and women – tend to ask a few weeks after starting their hair loss treatment course. Many want to know why is their hair still falling out as they expect to see shedding stop straight away, whilst – like you – some even find their hair is shedding more than ever before and, understandably, panic.

Rest assured, this type of hair loss is absolutely normal when you first start treatment with minoxidil, and it can actually be a good sign! You don’t mention if you are a Belgravia client so the information given here is based upon our experiences. However, if you have any concerns relating to treatment you have been given elsewhere, we would recommend you speak to your provider directly for personalised hair loss advice.

When you first start using minoxidil – with or without finasteride 1mg (men only) – this soaks into the scalp and stimulates the hair follicles, providing further nourishment and encouraging regrowth. Once these new hairs start to grow, they push out the old, thinning hairs which is why you may start to lose more hair than normal. This shedding stage does not happen to everyone, however when it does, it can last between two and four weeks, as the new hairs make their way through as a normal part of the hair growth cycle.

Many Belgravia clients with genetic hair loss encounter this type of shedding upon starting their treatment course but go on to experience stabilisation then positive, noticeable regrowth. Here are just a few examples of male and female pattern hair loss clients who have spoken to us about their experiences of first starting treatment…

This Male Pattern Hair Loss Treatment client noted that, “At first my hair was shedding but it seemed to stabilise after 2 months or so.” You can see his photoscans from before and after starting treatment, in his Success Story.

Whilst Derek, who is also following a course for his more advanced male pattern baldness, had this to say, “I was told that during the first 3 months of treatment, that I’d shed a lot of hair, as the new follicles would push the old ones out. I was however alarmed at the extent at which actually happened, but was reassured by Belgravia when I rang them up.  One year on, and I am really happy with the result.” Check out his regrowth to see why he’s so happy!

I was extremely worried about my hair loss when I started the treatment, shedding more hair made me even more worried,” said Ms F, a Female Pattern Hair Loss Treatment client. “But it was so much of a relief when my hair started to grow and became thicker every passing day.” View her Success Story to see her encouraging regrowth results.

Miss Scott, who is also receiving treatment for Female Pattern Hair Loss as well as Chronic Telogen Effluvium, had a slightly different experience.

As she explains, “I was scared as I was told I would shed a lot in the first few weeks of treatment but I didn’t. I started losing a few hairs recently and was so worried that I’d made a big mistake. I was proved so wrong today! Saw my 3 month in results compared to when I started and I could not be happier!!

David, a male pattern hair loss client who experienced shedding after starting his treatment course, gives some good advice. “The key thing here is to persevere,” he says, “The first 3 to 6 months are definitely the hardest because you can’t see positive results. That certainly changed after about 4 months for me. From that point on my hair has gradually got fuller and thicker…. Belgravia has changed my life and given me the choice of what haircut I want.

Hi Ganbat. Thank you for your comment but there are two issues we would like to address. Firstly, finasteride 1mg is only suitable for men so Jodie may not be able to take this medication - they do not state their gender in their query. Secondly, finasteride 1mg inhibits DHT not oil in the scalp. People with an oily scalp can still use minoxidil!

Sarah Belgravia

Hi Imran, we are unfamiliar with 'mintop' however we assume it is a form of minoxidil. You should, in the first instance, contact your treatment provider for any issues regarding its efficacy or suitability for your condition. If it does not work - and usually we recommend our clients follow their treatment regime for at least three to six months of consistent use in order to see what results they achieve - then there are various options, including different formulations of high strength minoxidil and adding in finasteride 1mg if you are using it for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. We would need to know more about your condition, level and pattern of shedding as well as your medical profile before recommending appropriate hair loss treatment options for your specific requirements. If you would like to receive a professional diagnosis and personalised treatment recommendations, please contact us to arrange a consultation at one of our London hair loss clinics or, alternatively if you are based outside London or abroad, please fill out our online consultation form.

Sarah Belgravia

Hi Vatsal, we are assuming you have already read the advice regarding the initial shedding that minoxidil can cause and that this is generally nothing to worry about. However, as you are not a Belgravia client - we do not use or recommend the product you mention and it is certainly not approved for use in the UK by the MHRA - we recommend you speak with your treatment provider for specific medical advice.
