Belgravia Centre Alopecia Areata Patchy Hair Loss Treatment Success Story

Name: Sahel

Question: From where can I get ruxolitinib cream? I have alopecia

Answer: Hi, Sahel. Topical ruxolitinib – whether cream or liquid, or indeed in oral form – is not yet available as a hair loss treatment.

It is currently being investigated as part of clinical trials exploring whether or not a number of drugs known as JAK inhibitors are suitable to treat hair loss from autoimmune conditions.

Researchers are testing them for both safety and efficacy on participants with Alopecia Areata as well as the more severe Alopecia Totalis (no head hair) and Alopecia Universalis (complete lack of hair from head to toe).

Results so far have been encouraging, however, until the studies have passed all the rigorous test procedures needed to ensure they are safe to use, these drugs will not be made available to prescribe or purchase.

In the meantime, at Belgravia we recommend high strength minoxidil, available in a number of formulations from both our clinic’s pharmacies, as an effective Alopecia Areata treatment. Many clients have seen significant hair growth, including full regrowth, from following personalised treatment courses featuring this key medication, as you can see from examples – like the one pictured here – that are shown in our Alopecia Areata Treatment Success Stories.

If you are interested in exploring this option, do contact the centre to book a free consultation so that one of our hair loss specialist nurses can assess your level and pattern of shedding then provide you with bespoke treatment recommendations. Alternatively, if you are unable to visit us due to your location, please complete an Online Consultation instead for our home-use service.

Hi Siri. This medication is still in the clinical trial phase and is not yet available. It will need to pass all relevant safety, efficacy and tolerability tests before being made available via prescription and the estimated date for this, if all tests results are satisfactory, by 2021. If you have alopecia areata - as opposed to alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis - there are other effective methods of topical treatment which are available now. You can find out more on our alopecia areata treatment page.

hi I am 33 and have been suffering with hair loss since my twenties and I have had two fue treatments and currently on finasteride and using minoxidil. I was wondering how you are able to put yourself forward for testing this product for the manufacturers? It’s something I would highly consider but I am unsure how to apply in the testing market.

Hi Shane, we don't hold clinical trials - the best thing to do is contact the institutions or companies mentioned in the articles regarding the trials you are interested in participating in, directly. Alternatively you can search for clinical trial registration websites which list all recruiting studies across the world. If you are looking for treatment for Male Pattern Baldness, you must ensure the drug corresponds to this diagnosis (Androgenetic Alopecia) and that the fact you use hair loss treatment and have had prior hair transplant surgery does not exclude you.
