What Tests And Studies Have Been Done on Minoxidil And Propecia For Hair Loss?

Hair Loss Research into New TreatmentAt The Belgravia Centre, our vast collection of before and during hair loss treatment photos are testament to the wonderful results our clients enjoy. However, we realise how important it is to our patients that the clinically proven medications which form the basis of our bespoke hair loss treatment programmes have been proven to elicit good results.

The first important point to make here is that both minoxidil and Propecia are the only clinically proven hair loss medications available.

They have been licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA, the medical regulatory bodies for the UK and the US respectively, to be sold as products which can treat pattern hair loss.

In order to achieve this status, rigorous testing has been carried out to ensure that the products can achieve what they claim to.

For those interested in the detailed results of Propecia and minoxidil studies, we have compiled some interesting studies below.

Minoxidil Studies

Back in 1987, a minoxidil study conducted at Stanford University on 72 adult males found that 100% experienced hair growth at four months, and appeared to peak at about 12 months. Also, 70% of the patients who continued to use the drug for 30 months had 50% or more hairs than when they originally started taking the minoxidil.

In 2004, a study by Dermatology Research Associates Inc involved 381 women applying 5% minoxidil, 2% minoxidil, or a placebo onto their pattern baldness twice daily. The 5% solution was superior to the placebo in promoting hair growth (as measured by change in the hair count) and patient/investigator assessments of hair growth and scalp coverage. The 2% liquid  was found to be less effective by patients than the 5%.

A 2009 study in Japan looked at whether 1% minoxidil solution is less effective than 5% by testing on 300 males. The difference between the two groups was significant, leading scientists to conclude that 5% minoxidil is more effective than 1% in treating men with male pattern hair loss

The above studies not only prove that minoxidil is an effective hair loss treatment for both men and women, but that the higher the concentration, the more effective it is in treating hair loss both in hair count and in patient opinion. At The Belgravia Centre, we have found high strength minoxidil to be extremely effective at treating stubborn cases of male and female pattern hair loss.

Propecia (finasteride 1mg) Studies

In 2001, the longest controlled clinical trial of a hair loss treatment ever by Merck & Co. Inc showed a difference of 277 hairs in a one-inch diameter circle of scalp in favour of men treated with Propecia for five years compared with those who received a placebo. It was also established that men treated with Propecia were more satisfied with the appearance of their hair overall (63% vs 20% who took the placebo). Physician investigators determined that 77% of the men treated with Propecia had increases in scalp hair, compared with 15% of men on the placebo.

In terms of different ethnicity, a combined analysis of two studies that looked at the effect of Propecia on vertex balding showed that the mean hair count changes were 91 vs -19 hairs (Propecia vs placebo) among Caucasian men, 49 vs -27 hairs among Black men, 53 vs -38 hairs among Asian men, and 67 vs 5 hairs among Hispanic men.

A 48-week, placebo-controlled study designed to assess the effect of Propecia on scalp hairs in vertex baldness tested 212 men with androgenic alopecia. At baseline and 48 weeks; total hair counts were obtained in a 1-cm target area of the scalp. Men treated with Propecia showed increases from original hair count with 18 hairs, whereas men treated with the placebo had decreases of 9 hairs.

In terms of dosage, Merck & Co. Inc tested the long term effects of finasteride on 1,553 men between ages 18 and 41 with mild to moderate hair loss. Based on their research, 1mg daily was selected, and after 2 years of daily treatment, over 83% of the 1,553 men experiencing male hair loss had actually maintained or increased their hair count from baseline. Therefore, The Belgravia Centre offers finasteride 1mg in oral tablet form.
