Question: What is the best shampoo to use after a hair transplant? I don't want to make my hair fall out after spending all that money!
Answer: Hi Robert. The surgeon carrying out your hair transplant should provide you with full information about aftercare. If they don't volunteer this, do ask for it as there are crucial steps you will need to follow post-surgery to ensure it has the best chances of long-term success.
In terms of the best shampoo to use following your surgery, this all depends on the surgeon so we would recommend you follow their advice. You can usually shampoo your hair the following day after surgery, and using an antiseptic shampoo such as Betadine can be beneficial although it is not essential. Generally, frequent shampooing to keep the area as sterile as possible will help to prevent infection while your scalp heals.
You should prepare yourself for the initial hair loss after your hair transplant - this is perfectly normal. However, in order to prevent further thinning around the transplanted area, an important part of your surgery aftercare should involve following a comprehensive hair loss treatment programme.
This will help to preserve the hair around the transplant so that the male pattern baldness that lead to your surgery does not continue to affect other parts of the top of your scalp. Failing to inhibit the DHT that binds to hair follicles and causes genetic hair loss in those who are predisposed to this hereditary condition, can lead to shedding around the transplanted hair. This tends to look unnatural and in extreme cases can lead to the transplanted area looking like a 'floating island' of hair.
Many surgeons also recommend starting this treatment at least six months prior to hair restoration surgery too. This is because it can help to stabilise shedding and ensure the hair is in optimum condition, making it easier for the surgeon to work with. A hair loss specialist will be able to provide you with more details should you need more information about hair loss treatments before and after hair transplants.
