The media has been buzzing about Wayne Rooney’s hair transplant recently, which has thrust all forms of hair loss treatment further into the limelight.
Now, however, it seems all is not going to plan for the Manchester United and England player. Pictures published this week in the tabloid newspapers suggest that the £30,000 hair transplant has had little or no effect on the footballer’s hairline.
Rooney was photographed in Boston, USA as he signed autographs for fans during Manchester United’s US tour. The pictures show that his hair is still thinning a lot around the crown, and his receding hairline is still very noticeable.
Rooney announced in early June that he had undergone a hair transplant procedure to treat his Male Pattern Baldness: “Just to confirm to all my followers I have had a hair transplant,” he tweeted at the time. “I was going bald at 25 why not. I’m delighted with the result.”
Despite the unsuccessful appearance of the latest photographs, hair can take up to four months to grow noticeably after a hair transplant. But it is also possible that the hair graft has not taken and will prove unsuccessful.
Hair transplants work by extracting follicles from a healthy area of a patients scalp, and then re-implanting them in an area that is balding. Wayne Rooney’s was particularly expensive, presumably because he paid for a top surgeon, but generally hair transplants cost between £3,000 and £12,000 depending on the number of follicles being moved.
If the transplant does turn out to be unsuccessful then Rooney will no doubt be disappointed, but on a premier league footballer’s salary he’s unlikely to be overly worried about the wasted money.
For mere mortals on more down to earth wages though, hair transplants can be prohibitively expensive, and are far from being the best hair loss treatment option.
