Tips for Women with Thinning Hair

If You Have Thinning Hair, Changing Your Hairstyle & Hair Loss Treatment Minoxidil May Help

There are many factors that contribute to hair loss in women. Diet, stress, hormones, pregnancy and medications can all play a part. However, female pattern (genetic) hair loss is more common than many people think. As with men, this type of hair loss is caused by a genetic oversensitivity to the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This affects the hair growth cycle by inhibiting the hair follicle, causing hair to become thinner and eventually stopping new hair growing.

For some women, the change is gradual and will develop over several months or years. For others, it may happen at a faster rate. There are ways to style thinning hair to help it look fuller. Many shampoos, conditioners, gels and mousses promise to increase hair volume, however they can only offer a short-term boost to the hair; they certainly won’t make hair grow back thicker.

By styling your hair in certain ways, it is possible to create a fuller look. Here are some styling tips for thinning hair:

  • Avoid longer hair styles as longer hair weighs more; as gravity pulls the hair down, more scalp will be exposed.

  • To make bald patches less obvious, if you have dark hair and a light scalp, consider a lighter hair colour, and vice-versa. Be careful not to use hair dye too often, as this can contribute to dry and brittle hair which is more prone to breakage.

  • Don’t part the hair where there are bald spots.

  • If most of the hair loss is on the top of the scalp, stylists suggest a cut with short, wavy or curly layers with the shortest layers at the top. This is recommended because short curls create lift and give the appearance of having more volume.

As well as following these styling tips, it is worth considering a hair loss treatment programme. Minoxidil is the only hair loss product for women that has successfully undergone clinical trials and been proven to help prevent hair loss and restore hair. It can be prepared in different strengths according to the condition of the hair. In addition, there are a range of hair growth boosters which can help tailor a programme to an individual.
