Kerrin
Question: I am 66 years old and have been using minodoxil for 15 years. The last 2 years I have noticed the front of my hair has thinned out considerably. I now have hair loss at my temples. I have fine baby fuzz where there was once strong hair. I have been using minodoxil on my temples for about a year and it has just gotten worse. Is there anything else I can do? I did consult a physician in August and was advised to continue using Minodoxil. He was not interested in woman’s hair loss. Thanks.
Hi, Kerrin. If you have been using minoxidil and it worked previously then, depending on your current level of hair loss, it could simply be that the formulation you are using is no longer suitable for you.
There are a number of formulations of women's high strength minoxidil available from Belgravia's in-clinic pharmacies. Our hair loss specialists would be happy to help you find a better solution if this is something you would like to investigate. They can also introduce appropriate hair growth boosters which can be used alongside your treatment. This process can be started either through an in-person assessment at one of our centres, or via an online consultation if you are unable to visit us in London.
As we age the hair does get naturally thinner due to a lack of collagen, however, the pattern of shedding that you describe certainly sounds like a case of female pattern hair loss. Another possible cause of hair loss around your temples is Traction Alopecia. This condition occurs when the hair is frequently worn tightly tied back in hairstyles that include a high bun, braids or taut ponytails. As the hairline tends to bear the brunt of these damaging styles which place excessive strain on the hair follicles, it can often result in hair loss around the temples and can resemble a receding hairline.
There are hair loss treatment courses available for both these conditions - or a combination of both as it is possible to have them simultaneously - so we recommend you have a consultation in order to get a professional diagnosis of your condition. From there a bespoked treatment plan can be recommended, tailored to your specific needs.
