The Hair Enhancer – Could It Be A Hair Loser?

The Daily Mail carried a report this week regarding a ‘revolutionary’ new hair loss treatment and the experiences of a woman who had undergone the regime. For this woman, as for many, the hormonal changes of the menopause had brought about significant hair loss also known as Androgenic Alopecia.

Unfortunately the hair never grew back, leaving a bald patch which caused the lady significant distress. The article went on to discuss many of the treatments which the woman had tried, including herbal treatments and the Enhancer, none of which had yielded positive results she wanted.

How does the Enhancer work?

Effectively a twist on the concept of traditional woven hair extensions, the Enhancer uses a mesh which is attached to the scalp with surgical tape, through which is pulled the patient’s own hair to hold it flat against the scalp. Natural hair extensions are then woven into the patient’s hair and attached to the mesh using tiny plastic clips.

Practitioners offering the Enhancer claim that the treatment lasts for two years at a cost of £800. The mesh must also be tightened every six weeks to keep it close to the scalp, costing a further £40 each time.

Sounds great, but is there a catch?

Although highly effective at covering patchy hair loss, the Enhancer could actually be a source of problems in future. Normal hair extensions are closely fitted using tension on the patient’s own hair for a close fit. The Extender exerts a similar pressure.
Herein lies a potential problem with the Enhancer: putting constant strain on hair can stretch hair follicles leading to the development of a condition called Traction Alopecia. Traction Alopecia is often observed in African American women who favour tightly-braided hairstyles. However, the condition affects men and women of any race.

Several high profile celebrities including Katie Price and Jennifer Aniston have been photographed bearing the tell-tale signs of hair loss caused by Traction Alopecia, caused by wearing  hair extensions.
