There is a man on the streets of New York who is known as ‘The BFM’ which is short for The Bald Fat Man. While this name may seem offensive to some, the man in question gave himself the name when a passing photographer, Scott Schuman, stopped him in the street and asked to take his photograph.
Schuman, a stay-at-home dad and veteran fashion photographer, launched a blog in 2005 to feature some of the stylish people he had photographed on the streets of New York. The blog is called the Sartorialist.
In 2006 Schuman stopped a man racing down Fifth Ave and asked him if he would have his photo taken for the blog. Schuman noticed the man was a perfect example of Neapolitan style – great shoes, smart shirt and tie and a dapper blue sports jacket.
The man replied in an Italian accent, “Not me, I’m a bald fat man!” Schuman struggled to find an appropriate response and stuttered, “No, you’re not…uhm…so?” Eventually the photographer said, “But you look so Italian! You are a well-dressed bald, fat man.” This made the Italian warm to him and when Schuman asked where he got his jacket, the deal was sealed. The man replied in a proud tone, “I have my tailor in Naples do it for me.”
The BFM was a breakthrough for the photographer whose work usually captures young, slim model types. The Sartorialist shows the beauty in all people; young, old, short, tall, thin, fat, hairy, bald.
Although there are many stylish bald men (Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Patrick Stewart, to name just a few) men who are experiencing early signs of hair loss do have the option of doing something about it.
There are proven hair loss treatments that have shown to be safe and effective in combating male pattern baldness. Minoxidil and Propecia are the only two products that have successfully undergone clinical trials and been licensed by the MHRA and ‘FDA-approved’ for the treatment of hair loss in the UK and the USA respectively.
If you are suffering from hair loss and would like to discuss treatment with a specialist, please contact the Belgravia Centre for a free consultation. Call on 020 7730 6666 or message the clinic. Alternatively, complete the online diagnostic form and a treatment advisor will be in touch.
