Taylor Swift Shows Signs of Hair Thinning

22-year-old country and western singer Taylor Swift has apparently become the latest celebrity  to develop Traction Alopecia caused by excessive use of hair extensions. Photographed leaving a West Hollywood restaurant and wearing her hair up in a ponytail, a bald patch was clearly visible on the top of Swift’s head.

Seasoned celebrity watchers have noted how the appearance of Taylor Swift’s hair had changed significantly since her triumphant appearance at the Grammy Awards on February 12th, apparently losing length and body. The dramatic change suggests that Taylor has had hair extensions removed in the intervening period.

The problem with hair extensions

Hair extensions are becoming increasingly popular with celebrities, fuelled by the popularity of stars such as Katie Price, Cheryl Cole and Coleen Rooney. However many of these famous women have gone on to experience a hair loss condition called Traction Alopecia which has left them with bald patches and areas of thinning hair.

Hair extensions are of themselves are generally safe to use without any ongoing negative effects on a woman’s hair so long as they are used on a temporary and infrequent basis. It is when hair extensions are worn for an extended or permanent basis that women can start to develop bald patches or hair loss.

Hair extensions are tightly braided to a woman’s own hair, as close as possible to the scalp. During the affixing process, the woman’s own hair is placed under great strain as the hair is straightened and the extensions attached. This combination of tension coupled with the extra weight of the actual extensions places hair follicles under unnatural strain.

Over time the tension causes hair follicles become distorted and pulled out of shape, and the natural hair falls out. If the hair follicles continue to be stretched it eventually becomes impossible for a new hair to grow properly, leading to further bald patches. Because extensions are attached to several adjacent hairs at once, when they fall out, the loss is quite apparent.

Resolving hair extension related hair loss

In Taylor Swift’s case, when faced with thinning hair and patchy baldness, the temptation will always be to have new extensions affixed to cover the problem. Although extensions or weaves can effectively hide patchy hair loss, they will also eventually result in further hair loss.

As a result the only way to correct hair loss caused by extensions is to stop wearing them and seek immediate advice from a hair loss expert, who will be able to identify correctly the cause of the thinning, and devise a treatment plan to enable the hair to regrow. Often women will find that given enough time their hair begins to grow back normally once the extensions have been removed although it is a good idea to get a proper diagnosis in the first instance.
