22-year-old country and western singer Taylor Swift has apparently become the latest celebrity to develop Traction Alopecia caused by excessive use of hair extensions. Photographed leaving a West Hollywood restaurant and wearing her hair up in a ponytail, a bald patch was clearly visible on the top of Swift’s head.
Seasoned celebrity watchers have noted how the appearance of Taylor Swift’s hair had changed significantly since her triumphant appearance at the Grammy Awards on February 12th, apparently losing length and body. The dramatic change suggests that Taylor has had hair extensions removed in the intervening period.

Hair extensions are of themselves are generally safe to use without any ongoing negative effects on a woman’s hair so long as they are used on a temporary and infrequent basis. It is when hair extensions are worn for an extended or permanent basis that women can start to develop bald patches or hair loss.
In Taylor Swift’s case, when faced with thinning hair and patchy baldness, the temptation will always be to have new extensions affixed to cover the problem. Although extensions or weaves can effectively hide patchy hair loss, they will also eventually result in further hair loss.
As a result the only way to correct hair loss caused by extensions is to stop wearing them and seek immediate advice from a hair loss expert, who will be able to identify correctly the cause of the thinning, and devise a treatment plan to enable the hair to regrow. Often women will find that given enough time their hair begins to grow back normally once the extensions have been removed although it is a good idea to get a proper diagnosis in the first instance.
