Because there is no ‘cure’ for genetic hair loss (also known as male pattern balding) any treatment must be ongoing for a patient who wishes to halt hair loss and regrow thinning areas of the scalp. If treatment is stopped, hair loss will begin once more, meaning patients are ‘back at square one’.
For men who take Propecia as part of a hair loss treatment programme, ceasing to use the hair loss medication will result in catch-up hair loss, whereby the loss that would have occurred during the period of time when Propecia is being taken happens.
The Importance of Consistency
This means that whilst men who cease to take Propecia don’t lose more hair than they would have done without using the medication, their hair has reverted to how it would have been should no treatment have been used. This is obviously very frustrating for the patient, and is why taking Propecia consistently is so important.
However, some men may not wish to continue taking Propecia for whatever reason (perhaps their partner is pregnant and they are worried about continually exposing the foetus to a trace of the medication) and when this happens, an alternative hair loss treatment need to be sought.
Minoxidil is the only other hair loss medication that has been licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA to treat hair loss. Whilst men can take Propecia and minoxidil at the same time (this provides a highly effective hair loss treatment approach) the medications can also be used separately.
An Alternative Medication
Minoxidil comes in a range of strengths, from liquids up to a high strength minoxidil cream for particularly stubborn areas of hair loss. Belgravia also add a variety of ingredients to their minoxidil that appear to block DHT when applied locally, meaning that men who cannot take Propecia can potentially use Belgravia’s minoxidil formulations to halt hair loss.
Alongside these two proven medications, there are a variety of other hair loss products than can be used alongside either, or both, of the proven medications. Ranging from nutritional supplement Hair Vitalics to the FDA cleared device for hairloss the LaserComb, these treatment boosters ensure all-round hair and scalp health, meaning that hair regrows at its optimum level.
