Premier League football referee Mark Clattenburg recently spoke out about his hair loss. The football ref has had noticeably thinning hair on top for years, but recently it has appeared to undergo a dramatic resurgence, prompting speculation from regular followers of the game and pundits.
For some time, Clattenburg has been tight-lipped over whether he had undergone a hair loss treatment programme, but he has now confirmed it. He has, however, declined to disclose the exact nature of the hair loss treatment that he underwent.
Speculation over Mark Clattenburg’s hair loss treatment
There are a number of theories over the specific treatment Clatternburg has undergone, with a hair transplant being a strong contender in the view of the tabloid newspapers. A transplant involves surgically removing the healthy hair follicles from one part of the scalp and then implanting them into a balding area on another part of the scalp. Though hair transplants have been hyped up by the celebrity hungry media, the results can be hit and miss. Considering the high price tag of the procedure – between around £3,000 and £12,000 depending on the amount of hair that needs to be transplanted – it is far from an ideal hair loss treatment.
Others have speculated that the referee might simply be wearing a hairpiece, but looking at recent pictures there are few signs to suggest this.
Another possibility is that Clattenburg’s hair re-growth might be due to pharmaceutical treatments. There are currently two hair loss drugs on the market which are scientifically proven to prevent hair loss and promote re-growth. These are Minoxidil and Propecia, which have both been licensed by the MHRA for the treatment of Male Pattern Baldness. Clattenburg’s results are comparable to many of those featured on Belgravia’s success story blog.
