Question: I’ve just noticed a bald patch…

Question: I’ve just noticed a bald patch on the top of my head. It’s round and about the size of a 2 pence piece. It’s strange because I’ve never noticed it before and it’s quite big – it must’ve literally come up over night! I’ve read up about bald patches on the internet and it seems it might be alopecia but I’m really worried because I don’t want to lose all my hair. Please help!

Answer: I wouldn’t say there’s too much reason to worry. It is understandable that a sudden patch of hair loss of this size (Alopecia Areata) can be a shock but from experience I can tell you that most of the time it will not progress into Alopecia Totalis or Universalis (loss of all scalp hair or all body hair respectively). With Totalis or Universalis the initial loss is generally more extreme than just one patch – people will experience a vast amount of hair being lost at once.

For patchy Alopecia we find that minoxidil cream grows the patches of hair back most of the time.

I get those patches all the time, I have had probably 5 or 6 since the age of 18 or probably more I haven't really noticed, but they seemed to come along every so often. Of course my hair grows back but then I get another patch somewhere else on my head, its weird, I lose alot of hair anyway, but you can never tell as I have really thick curly hair, but they range from 5c pieces to 50c and they are almost always round patches of hair.

Hi Rashida, Yes, there is something you can do. Firstly you need to get in touch with your doctor or a hair loss specialist so a proper examination can be carried out to confirm if it is alopecia areata or another type of hair loss, and determine the most suitable course of action and discuss the likely results. If it is alopecia areata, there is a good chance that your hair will grow back within 12 months without treatment. However, you are clearly already finding it very distressing so you might be interested in the treament options for alopecia areata. The Belgravia Centre finds high strength minoxidil to be effective in many cases. Here are some photo examples of people who have been to the centre for alopecia areata treatment - Alopecia Areata Photo Scans. Call us on 020 7730 6666 or message the centre to book an appointment, or complete and submit an online diagnostic form with photos of the location of hair loss attached.

Well my daughter has had her patch for more than 3 years and she is 12 now, Lucky for her you can cover her's with hair. but it really knocks down her confidants. she doesn't like going to her friends house to stay. I still do her hair now, the doctor has give her loads of different treatment. but none has fully worked. its is growing back but it will be another few years yet. we don't no what caused this but the doctor said it was stress. I don't like knowing my daughter is under stress. We are running out of ideas to keep the patch covered.

I am 24 years old and have dealt with female patterned hair loss since I was 14 years old. It ruined my confidence so much and I have tried countless hair pills and shampoos (ex: Nioxin shampoo). Of course we all have different type of hair, so naturally different products work for all of us.
