People Call NHS 111 Helpline For Hair Loss Advice

In April 2013 the popular NHS Direct service was replaced by a '111' helpline for those who have urgent medical queries that aren't quite serious enough to warrant a trip to A&E or calling 999.

Since then, the service has received a number of enquiries that arguably seem considerably less important, including calls from people worried about hair loss.

A million calls per month

Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt said: 'With a million calls a month, NHS 111 is helping the NHS deal with growing demand by directing people to the most appropriate place for their injury or illness.'

Among the past year's 111 callers were 7 people worried about athlete's foot, 99 people wanting advice on what to do if you have been bitten by another person, and 2,733 calls regarding constipation, with other calls regarding hair loss, sunburn and getting an object stuck in the ear or nose.
