It sounds strange, but it’s often easy to miss the early signs of hair loss. For instance, a receding hairline can be gradual, and it may only be when looking at old photographs that the difference between the hair you previously had and what you’re faced with now becomes apparent.
That said, at least changing hairlines and emergent thinning crowns tend to get picked up on as they gradually become more pronounced, allowing those with the onset of male pattern hair loss to seek treatment. However, those with an all over thinning atop the head, a very common sign of male pattern loss, are often slower to realise that they’re experiencing excess shedding.
Spotting Hair Loss
Whilst it could be due to bad diet, stress, and other environmental factors, thinning atop the head is usually due to the genetic condition pattern balding. Whilst this type of shedding cannot be prevented or ‘cured,’ it can be treated to prevent further hair loss and also potentially to regrow the thinning area. Treatment needs to be consistent, but when used as advised it can make a noticeable difference.
A clinically proven hair loss treatment plan would need to include at least one of the only two medications that the UK and US regulatory bodies (the MHRA and the FDA) have licensed or approved for use as a hair loss treatment. The first potential medication, Propecia, blocks DHT, the androgen that causes pattern hair loss by leading to follicular shrinkage atop the scalp, which causes weaker and thinner hairs to be produced.
Blocking DHT, which is not needed by the male body after puberty has ended, presents no problems, and it can go a long way in stopping hair loss in its tracks and allowing follicles time to recover. The second proven medication, minoxidil, can also help hair loss, and does so by stimulating the follicles to grow new and healthy hair. Together, the two medications are highly complementary.
And How To Halt It
Propecia comes in a standard daily dose, but minoxidil can be varied in strength depending on your initial case. A liquid would probably be sufficient for mild thinning, and an extra-strength minoxidil cream more so for stubborn hair loss. There are also several ingredients that a hair loss specialist can select to combine with your dose of minoxidil that appear to block DHT when applied locally: azelaic acid, caffeine and medroxyprogesterone.
As well as adding these two medications to your daily routine, there are a number of treatment boosters that can also help keep hair healthy and give it the best possible change of growing back. Ranging from our nutritional supplement Hair Vitalics, which combines vitamins, minerals and other key ingredients for optimum hair and scalp health, to the FDA cleared LaserComb, which can speed up and encourage regrowth, every angle is tackled to ensure hair loss is treated in the most effective way possible.
