Question: I damaged my hair from bleaching it too much, so decided to cut it very short. But it doesn't seem to be growing back properly, I think I am going bald. I want to try Nioxin but don't know which one is best because they have many different products (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8). Which one is most suitable? I would also like to buy a scalp treatment such as Follicle Booster but want to know which one would be best to make my hair grow back stronger and thicker like before. Please help!
Answer: I have had a scan through the Nioxin website and read through their different 'systems' (1 to 8) which are currently available (at the time of writing, March 2009). As with all other hair loss supplements, there is no evidence that any of these products will individually help to prevent hair loss. We always advise trying the clinically-proven treatments as a first port of call, as these are the products most likely to be effective.
This approach may save you time and money experimenting with what can often essentially be haircare products that provide a temporary boost to how the hair looks, rather than addressing the underlying reasons for the condition. Haircare products can be used in addition to established hair loss treatments but, used on their own, they are unlikely to have much more than a temporary cosmetic effect - particularly if you have a genetic hair loss condition.
The proven treatments are Finasteride 1mg (men only), Minoxidil and the HairMax LaserComb when recommended combinations are used correctly, and with supplementary hair growth supporting products integrated as desired, many users will experience some degree of hair regrowth and almost all will stop losing their hair.
