Question: My pattern baldness is more akin to female pattern baldness. My hairline isn’t receding from the sides but instead from the center, I’ve combed my hair parted for the last 20 years and now the part is growing, the front middle part of my scalp is thinning out a lot, hairline at the front isn’t that bad. What would you recommend?
Hi Tom. This sounds like a pattern of male hair loss known as general thinning.
Although many people may think of a thinning crown and/or a receding hairline when they think of how Male Pattern Baldness typically displays, there are other patterns of hair loss associated with this condition too.
However, it is entirely possible for men to display signs of female pattern hair loss - where there is thinning all over the top of the head, usually most noticeable at the parting and temples - as well as for women to display signs more commonly associated with male pattern hair loss.
Thinning on top is a common consequence of male pattern hair loss, due to the miniaturisation process. However, if the thinning is not just confined to the top of the head it could also be something called Telogen Effluvium.
Whilst genetic hair loss is a permanent, progressive condition that is inherited, Telogen Effluvium causes temporary shedding for up to twelve months. It is usually caused by prolonged stress or as a side-effect of medication or health conditions, such as diabetes. Hair should regrow naturally but there is treatment for Telogen Effluvium available to help speed this process up.
There are also effective male hair loss treatments which can be used in conjunction with hair growth boosters to counteract your thinning and improve your hair's condition. An expert can put together a bespoke regrowth plan based around both treatments and boosters tailored specifically to your pattern and stage of shedding. You can find many examples of men who have experienced thinning on top and seen significant regrowth, in Belgravia's Success Stories.
It definitely sounds like you could be experiencing male pattern hairloss but, to be sure, we would advise you to consult a hair loss specialist, either in person or online.
