Tory MP Nadine Dorries, who you may remember from her starring role in 2012's I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! series, has spoken out about her hair loss on ITV's Daybreak programme, likening it to having a mastectomy.
The MP for Mid Bedfordshire explained that first noticed that her thinning hair when she caught a glimpse of the back of her head on television, and has admitted that she cries everyday over her hair loss, adding that: "It's a bit like your femininity is going down the shower, it's going down the plughole."
The controversial Member of Parliament explained that to her, losing hair was a "confidence stealer" and in that sense was similar to having a mastectomy, going on to say that: "You're losing your confidence and you're losing your ability to go out and actually face the world because you think what identifies a woman are her hair and her breasts."
What is unclear from her interview is whether Nadine is aware of the fact that there is a medication available to women that treats hair loss, which has been licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA (the UK and US regulatory bodies respectively) for this purpose.
This medication is called minoxidil, and it can stimulate regrowth in thinning areas. Unless Nadine is losing hair due to chronic stress or other lifestyle factors including nutritional deficiencies (blood tests can often establish whether certain lifestyle factors are the cause) it's likely that her shedding is due to female pattern hair loss (providing that her hair loss is diffused over the top of her scalp, as it appears to be).
Belgravia offers a wide range of effective high strength minoxidil formulations, some of which are particularly effective for stubborn thinning. Certain added ingredients which appear to block the hormone that causes genetic hair loss, DHT, may also be added.
A hair loss specialist would be able to advise Nadine on the ideal combined daily dosage and formulation of minoxidil for her individual case. A number of hair growth boosters, such as the FDA cleared Laser Comb and the daily nutritional food supplement Hair Vitalics, may also be suitable for Nadine to use, and together these products form a comprehensive hair loss treatment programme.
