Menopausal Hair Loss

Menopausal Woman The Belgravia Centre

Many of the symptoms of the menopause are well known; hot flushes, mood swings and changes to monthly periods. Perhaps less well known is the effect that the menopause can have on a woman’s hairline. According to some experts, as many as 40% of post-menopausal women experience hair loss.

Unlike Male Pattern Balding, however, female hair loss is often much more subtle and easily missed. Where men tend to thin in large patches at the temple and crown, women are more prone to losing hair across the whole scalp, making hair loss harder to spot in the early stages.

Hormones and hair loss

Hormones

are extremely important to hair health in both men and women, which is why the menopause and the changes it brings can have such a major effect on hairlines. In the same way that the chemical changes brought about pregnancy can cause a woman’s hair to grow more than normal, menopausal changes can instead cause hair to fall out.

HRT and menopausal hair loss

To help restore the hormonal balance, many post-menopausal women begin Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). The introduction of added oestrogen and progesterone helps restore equilibrium and can reduce the risk of women developing female pattern baldness. However, HRT is for the treatment of the menopause itself, not for side effects such as hair loss.

Sometimes women may be advised to undergo testosterone therapy as part of their HRT treatment, creating an unexpected problem. Testosterone plays a crucial role in pattern balding in both men and women, so increasing levels of the hormone could actually make hair loss worse.

HRT may not always be a suitable solution for preventing female hair loss. Whether undergoing HRT treatment or not, women should seek advice from a hair loss expert at their earliest convenience to deal specifically with the issue of re-growing the hair that has been lost during the menopause.

Successful treatments for female hair loss

The Belgravia Centre has treated many women with hair loss due to the menopause. Our approach is to create a holistic treatment plan tailored to the specifics of the individual’s hair loss condition. Often this involves the use of Minoxidil, a clinically proven treatment for hair loss in women, which is formulated in different strengths at our in-house pharmacy.

Our hair loss experts consider every aspect of a client’s hair loss so that they can address every potential avenue for encouraging regrowth. This can include dietary advice, backed by our unique Hair Vitalics herbal supplement, or use of a LaserComb to help stimulate hair follicles in the scalp.
