Just last week we brought you the news that hair loss and heart disease had been linked, and now it seems that balding could also be a warning sign for high blood pressure. There is a theory that the same androgen that causes hair loss on top of the scalp might also cause artery walls to thicken and increase blood pressure.
High blood pressure is thought to affect as many as thirty percent of the population, but many of those will be completely in the dark about having the condition on account of the usual lack of obvious physical symptoms. However, scientists appear to have identified a link between high blood pressure and male pattern hair loss. The reason behind the link is unknown but it is thought that it may be down to the fact that high blood pressure restricts the flow of blood to the hair follicles.
The same group of researchers also found a link between type 2 diabetes and hair loss, as similarly to high blood pressure, this type of diabetes causes blood vessel walls to harden, leading to them becoming narrow. This means that less oxygen can circulate, which can result in hair shedding.
Whilst a hair loss treatment programme won’t tackle the underlying cause, once this has been dealt with hair may need some help returning to its previous thick and healthy condition. The androgen that causes hair loss, DHT, can be blocked by the medication Propecia. Blocking DHT doesn’t present any problems, as the androgen is not needed by the male body after puberty, but it does mean that follicular shrinkage atop the scalp is halted, meaning hairs can grow back healthy.
Addressing The Symptom
For Propecia to be effective, hair follicles still need to be producing some hair, even if the hair in question is really thin and breaks easily. Often, though, follicles need a helping hand in regrowing hair, and this is where the second and only other clinically proven for hair loss medication comes in useful. Minoxidil, which like Propecia is licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA for treating hair loss, appears to stimulate regrowth.
As minoxidil is dose dependent, even stubborn patches of hair loss can be tackled with a high strength minoxidil cream: particularly effective for a receding hairline. Alongside these two medications, a variety of hair growth boosters such as the nutritional supplement Hair Vitalics come together to form a comprehensive hair loss treatment programme tailored to your exact needs by a hair loss specialist. Hair Vitalics helps to ensure the blood being delivered to the hair follicle is in perfect condition for healthy hair growth.
