Though always immaculately turned out, like her brother Rob Kardashian, Kim Kardashian has previously experienced hair loss, which was potentially caused by her love of hair extensions. When used over an extended period of time, extensions can cause a condition called traction alopecia, where hair follicles are put under so much sustained pressure that hair thins out and may need treatment with a high strength minoxidil cream to return to its previous thickness.
However, in recent weeks Kim's hair appears to be in great condition, especially along the parting, which suggests that rather than extensions, her natural hair is both healthy and thick. The reason behind this is most likely Kim's pregnancy, as pregnant mothers often notice a decrease in shed hair.
The reason behind this is that during pregnancy, production of female hormones oestrogen and progesterone increase. This means that the hair cycle becomes longer as a whole, but the resting stage becomes very short. The resting stage is the final stage of the hair's cycle, after which the hair sheds. This shedding usually occurs after the woman has given birth.
High levels of oestrogen can also cause some follicles to enter the anagen (growth) stage, so more follicles than usual are producing hair during the pregnancy. High levels of this female hormone can also stall some follicles that are in the intermediate catagen phase, so less hair is lost in this respect, too.
Whilst Kim will no doubt be enjoying her lustrous locks, she should be aware that after she gives birth and her hormone levels are back to normal, a noticeable degree of shedding will probably occur. Because so many more hairs than normal have been in the growth stage, many more than usual will shed after entering the resting phase at the same time.
New mothers experiencing this shedding needn't worry, hair will usually grow back to its pre-pregnancy condition. As much as 25% of your hair may shed at this point, so it can be quite a daunting prospect, however providing there are no other symptoms present, it really shouldn't be a long term problem. However, if six months has passed and your hair is still not back to normal, a hair loss treatment programme can help treat hair to prevent it thinning further and to regrow your lost locks.
Women, providing that they aren't pregnant, are able to use one clinically proven hair loss treatment, called minoxidil. This treatment is applied direct to the thinning areas of the scalp, and whilst the reason for its effectiveness at regrowing hair is unknown, the MHRA has licensed and the FDA have cleared it for use as a hair loss medication.
Alongside medication, there are a variety of ways in which the treatment can be boosted to ensure optimum results are achieved. From adding a variety of ingredients such as MPG (Medroxyprogesterone) to the minoxidil and taking our nutritional supplement Hair Vitalics, Kim would be ensuring that she's back to fabulous after the birth of her child in no time at all.
