80’s heart throb Jason Donovan has returned to wider public attention thanks to a successful run on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. Seven weeks into the competition and Donovan has received a number of highly respectable scores including a high score for his Quickstep.
Although clearly aged somewhat since his 1986 breakthrough as Scott Robinson in Australian soap, Neighbours, Donovan is still incredibly popular with his female fans having completed a run on the Here and Now tour shortly before starting on Strictly. Yet despite his boyish good looks, Jason has experienced significant hair loss problems in the past.
Cocaine-related hair loss?
Between 1995 and the birth of his first child in 2000, Jason Donovan fought a well-publicised battle against cocaine addiction. Ingesting as much as 2 grams of coke every day, Donovan’s general health deteriorated and was probably a contributing reason for his significant hair loss at the time.
Photographs from 2000 onwards show that as Donovan left his drug habits behind him and has probably used preventative treatments to improve and maintain the density of his hair. Now eleven years sober, Jason Donovan has the hairline of an average 43 year old; not perfect but certainly much healthier than in the mid-90s.
Is all as it seems?
As important as kicking his drug habit was for his general health, the rapid regrowth suggests that Jason Donovan may have undergone some form of hair loss treatment. When quizzed about the transformation back in 2006, an expert from The Belgravia Centre observed; ‘Jason definitely looks to have done something about his hair. Although it is possible that he has had a strip hair transplant, it is more likely that he has had used one or more of the licensed treatments.’
Receding hair and Recreational Drugs
The use of recreational drugs, particularly cocaine, has been observed to cause a form of hair loss known as Telogen Effluvium, which causes hair follicles to stop growing. Although this is a temporary condition, these type of lifestyle habits can trigger or accelerate androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss) which is most likely what affected Donovan’s hair.
Hair regrowth and the Rumba
Donovan’s new head of hair seems to have revived his career, with roles in various West End shows, comeback tours, adverts, and even a spot on ITV’s ‘I’m a Celebrity Get, Get Me Out of Here’. The Belgravia Centre’s personalised hair loss treatment plans can achieve similar regrowth results as Jason’s.
