Question: Do you have a product or suggestion to thicken and lengthen eye lashes for men?
Answer: In answer to your question Gareth, the product you may want to try is Latisse.
Back in November 2008 we posted a story about the soon-to-be-FDA-approved ‘Latisse’, a new drug designed to lengthen and thicken eye lashes. Shortly after, at the end of last year, Latisse got its FDA approval and we are following its progression closely as the company behind it, Allergan Inc, is using it in trials for hair loss. If there is strong evidence to show it can prevent hair loss and help re-growth, then we will be making the relevant enquiries.
The Latisse solution is similar to hair loss products Minoxidil and Propecia in that it is a prescription treatment that has successfully undergone rigorous, extensive clinical trials and safety testing to earn the FDA stamp of approval. Allergan says their product makes eyelashes (for men and women) grow thicker, longer and darker. The company believes it works by affecting the growth (anagen) phase of the eyelash hair cycle in two ways. First, it increases the length of this phase and second, it increases the number of growth hairs in this phase. The exact mechanism by which it does this is unknown at present.
Allergan say that users should start to see eye lash growth after 8 weeks with full growth at 12 to 16 weeks. If you stop using Latisse, then your eyelashes are expected to return to their previous state over several weeks to months. The possible side effects include an itching sensation and/or eye redness, reported by 4% of users. Less common side effects include skin darkening, eye irritation, dryness of the eyes and redness of the eyelids.
Latisse can only be prescribed by a doctor, however as it is only relatively recently that the product was approved by the FDA, the website has a ‘find a doctor’ tool. As with hair loss treatments such as those offered at the Belgravia Centre, it is highly advisable to seek professional advice, and not to purchase the product from some rogue internet site. All of these products are drugs and the best results will be seen when your condition (be it eye lash or hair loss) is diagnosed by a specialist and the treatment is prescribed by a doctor.
