Question: Is this problem of hair loss post pregnancy permanent? I found it be a part of every forum to talk on this point but no solution.
Answer: Hi Kanmegha, Post-Partum Alopecia - the thinning hair which can follow pregnancy - is generally a temporary hair loss condition, lasting up to 12 months following childbirth.
In some cases it may last for more than 12 months if it develops into a condition known as Chronic Telogen Effluvium. This may be brought on by prolonged stress - something which can be common in sleep-deprived new mums.
Both conditions are still temporary and the hair will generally regrow on its own, although there are hair loss treatment options available to help encourage regrowth. However, it is possible for either of these conditions to trigger a progressive and permanent form of hair loss.
For those women with a family history of genetic hair loss and an hereditary predisposition towards Female Pattern Hair Loss, it is possible for this condition to be triggered following either Post-Partum Alopecia or Diffuse Thinning.
Women's hair loss can often be treated effectively with minoxidil complemented by hair growth boosters, as you can see from the many Belgravia clients who have seen significant results from following our bespoke regrowth programmes based around these components. If you would like personalised hair loss advice, a specialist at one of our Central London clinics will be able to provide this as well as treatment recommendations for your specific situation.
