Is Nicolas Cage’s Son Suffering from Hair Loss?

Weston Cage Hair Loss

Actor Nicolas Cage is no stranger to hair loss, or to rumours that he has undergone treatment for it. Like many men his age, the 45 year-old star of films such as Con Air, Face Off and Ghost Rider suffers from the hair loss condition Male Pattern Baldness, and his hairline has been slowly receding over the years.

Now it seems that his son, Weston Cage, may also be suffering from hair loss, but of an entirely different type.

A possible case of Alopecia Areata

According to the Daily Mail, 20 year-old Weston, who is the singer of goth metal band Eyes of Noctum, recently shaved his head after he began suffering from the hairloss condition Alopecia Areata.

The singer is usually seen sporting long past-the-shoulder dark hair, to suit his goth image. But the newspaper says that his hair began to fall out in clumps, prompting him to take action by shaving it all off close to the scalp.

The Mail reported that after shaving off his hair, young Cage’s Facebook status read: “My hair is gone now because like Hades and my father both ... My head catches on fire when I’m angry.” The meaning of this is not immediately clear.

If the singer is indeed suffering from Alopecia, then it may well be stress that has caused it. He has recently experienced marital difficulties, having separated from and then reconciled with his wife.  At one low point, they were both arrested for domestic violence earlier this year. The couple have been married since April and are currently expecting a child.

What is Alopecia Areata?

Weston Cage is just one in a series of celebrities who have been linked to the hairloss condition Alopecia in recent years. Alopecia Areata is a disease caused by a dysfunction of the body’s auto-immune system. The exact causes of it remain unknown, but it is widely linked to stress and traumatic experiences suffered by the individual. When the condition develops, the body’s own natural defences begin attacking healthy hair follicles, causing hair production to cease and hair to fall out.

The first signs of Alopecia are patchy hair loss, and hair coming out in clumps, as has been suggested happened to Weston Cage. In many cases the hair may re-grow naturally at a later date, but the hair loss can also progress further. In some individuals the hairloss can extend across the entire scalp, resulting in total baldness, and is known as Alopecia Totalis. The condition can also result in total loss of all body hair, including eyebrows. This is known as Alopecia Universalis. In the majority of cases of Alopecia Areata, the condition will stay mild to moderate, causing patchy bald patches that can grow back on their own but are also considerably receptive to treatment.

Alopecia Areata is often not permanent, and while there is no cure, individuals are often receptive to treatment which can halt the hair loss and re-grow the hair. However, in cases of Alopecia Totalis and Universalis, the chances of re-growth are very slim.

Sometimes Alopecia Areata can appear to subside, only for symptoms to manifest themselves again months or years later.

If the conditions which first triggered the Alopecia, such as a stressful daily life, persist, then the condition is far more likely to return.

Can Alopecia Areata be treated?

At The Belgravia Centre we regularly see cases of Alopecia Areata, and have experienced great success in treating the condition. Our hair loss experts have at their disposal a wide range of different hair loss treatments which they utilise as needed. We have had particular success when treating Alopecia with our own formulation of Minoxidil 12.5% with Azelaic Acid.

In addition to Alopecia Areata, we also treat individuals with the hair loss condition that Weston’s father, Nicolas Cage suffers from, Male Pattern Baldness. Unlike Alopecia, Male Pattern Baldness is a genetically inherited condition which can be passed down families along either the paternal or maternal line. It generally results in a receding hairline or general thinning across the crown and in some cases can leads to total baldness. Luckily though, caught at the right time genetic hair loss is the most successfully treatable form of hair loss and Belgravia can offer effective and proven treatment combinations that will clear up male hair loss and regrow hair in most cases.
