Perhaps the biggest myth relating to hair loss is that age and balding are proportional. The truth is that hair loss is a process that can begin as early as puberty. Like any process, it can be rapid or slow. It can progress in a predictably inevitable fashion, or it can seemingly stabilise, and then continue to progress. So what is actually going on and what can be done?
Assuming the condition is male or female pattern hair loss – the most common forms of hair loss – then it is the continuous exposure of genetically predisposed hair follicles to DHT (or dihydrotestosterone). DHT is a compound in the body that causes a miniaturisation of the hair follicles in those whose follicles are particularly sensitive to its effects. This means the anagen (or active growth) phase of the hair life-cycle becomes gradually briefer and the hair becomes finer and shorter. The result is thinning hair – this should set the warning bells ringing as it is the precursor to more extensive hair loss and the point at which hair loss tends to be noticed first. It’s not that there are fewer hairs on the head, but that their diameter is so diminished that they no longer provide as much coverage for the scalp as before.
Hair loss is a concerning issue, regardless of age, but the good news is that if you treat the condition as soon as you notice you hair starting to thin, it can be side-stepped all together. After all, prevention is better than cure and never has the phrase been more true than if you’re young and on the way to possible baldness.
