Is Hair Loss Hereditary?

BaldyIf your father or grandfather went bald and you can already see that telltale thinning hair on the top of your scalp, or notice signs of a receding hairline, you may feel that hair loss is inevitable.

The good news is, although there certainly is a hereditary element to hair loss, there are clinically proven methods to prevent it, and to encourage healthy re-growth. The Belgravia Centre provides an individualised treatment programme to tackle genetic hair loss, using the only two products that are licensed by the MHRA in the UK and FDA-approved in the US.

Male pattern baldness is caused by male hormones called androgens, which act on genetically predisposed hair follicles. Within these hair follicles, the male hormone testosterone is converted into the androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. This inhibits the growth of new hair cells, which ultimately leads to male pattern baldness.

Hair loss affects 1 in 5 men by the age of 20, and by the age of 60 more than two-thirds of men will be experiencing receding or thinning hair. While in the past this may have been inevitable and came down to genetics, or the ‘luck of the draw’, increasing numbers of men now choose to successfully challenge their hair loss with clinically proven, effective treatment.

The Belgravia Centre offers comprehensive treatment programmes for hairloss that integrate medically proven pharmaceutical formulations with various hair growth boosters, under the care of a trichologist who will individually tailor your treatment and monitor the results.

receding hairline regrowthIt could be that you’ve tried over the counter or mail order products before and been discouraged by the lack of results. There’s a good reason for that. Most of the hair loss products available have no scientific evidence to back them up.

That’s why the Belgravia Centre uses the only two products that have been proven to work in clinical trials. Both have substantial evidence to demonstrate their effectiveness, and used together, they are the most successful treatment available for hereditary baldness.

Propecia, which is recognised by the government medical regulatory bodies in the UK and US (the MHRA and FDA respectively) is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It blocks the enzyme that is instrumental in the formation of DHT, thereby inhibiting genetic hair loss. DHT is not needed by the adult male, and blocking it is an effective method of treating male pattern balding.

Minoxidil, which is also MHRA licensed and FDA approved, is a topical cream that is applied directly to the scalp. It enhances the blood supply, increasing the nutrients that are delivered to the hair follicles, preventing shrinkage and thereby preventing hair loss and in many cases promoting re-growth.
