If one were to believe a certain Irishman, scientists have got it all wrong. The Pogues' frontman Shane MacGowan, who refuses to ever wash his hair when he's not at home, says Guinness is the only proven hair loss treatment.
He may have had his teeth restored but MacGowan is free from the follicle challenge and recently revealed his secret to maintaining his hairline. The 52-year-old said he regularly washes his hair in the alcoholic beverage and insists men tackling baldness would be wise to do the same.
"They sell all those lotions to cure you of baldness... They don't work. There is only one way to cure baldness - you pour Guinness over your head, collect it in a bucket, and drink it in the morning," he says. "It's proven to work."
MacGowan could be on to something, but experts say the man who said "I drink because I'm thirsty" needs to think of a different excuse to stock up on Guinness. While the "Guinness is Good for You" plug has been debated, unfortunately there is no solid proof that the black stuff can make your hair grow.
"There are a lot of old wives tales about cures for baldness and it seems we've got a new one," Belgravia Centre hair loss specialist, Leonora Doclis said. "I wouldn't waste money on gallons of Guinness when there are hair loss treatments that are proven to work."
Hair loss is mainly the result of a genetic predisposition to the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Lost you? Well, let's just say it’s genetic and can be inherited from either the mother's or father's side of the family. You can't prevent the genetic trait from presenting itself by blocking the follicles with Guinness, but there are scientifically proven ways to keep the condition under control.
There are a lot of snake oils and quack hair loss remedies available but there are only two treatments that have been scientifically refined and licensed by medical regulatory bodies for the treatment and prevention of hair loss. When used combined and administered correctly, and with close monitoring, most people will see some degree of hair loss stabilisation and regrowth.
