A Japanese study (Mamada et al., 2008) has suggested that eucalyptus extract, long regarded as valuable for its antiseptic and decongestant properties, may also be beneficial to hair. The team of Tokyo-based scientists found that eucalyptus extract not only improved hair gloss intensity but also strengthened the root by improving elasticity in the new-growth part of the cortex. The changes were seen in both male and female hair, and in Japanese and Caucasian subjects.
Here at the Belgravia Centre we’re always excited to hear about anything that may potentially be beneficial to hair, but we do have to strike a note of caution when it comes to products that specifically claim to slow hair loss or promote re-growth.
Sadly, many of the commercially available products out there are woefully lacking in robust evidence to back up their claims. That’s why at Belgravia we choose to base our comprehensive hair loss treatment courses around the only two products that are clinically proven to be effective.
Propecia, for male hair loss, and Minoxidil, for both men and women, are the only products that are licensed by the MHRA in the UK and approved by the FDA in the US. These are pharmaceutical prescription medications proven to prevent hair loss and promote re-growth. No other products are allowed by law to make such claims.
Of course many clients will benefit from products that promote the health of their hair while they undertake a treatment course, and The Belgravia Centre has its own daily supplement, Hair Vitalics, based on extensive research and designed to complement our primary hair loss treatments.
Hair Vitalics contains herbal ingredients including saw palmetto, aloe vera and ginkgo biloba, as well as other key nutrients to keep your hair at its optimum condition, and is designed to help boost the level of hair loss stabilisation and hair re-growth. However, while similar – and more expensive – commercially available supplements are marketed as stand-alone hair loss treatments, Belgravia has found no scientific evidence to support these claims. Hair Vitalics is intended as a booster to be used alongside our pharmaceutical prescription medications.
The specialists at the Belgravia Centre may combine Propecia and Minoxidil with Hair Vitalics and other hair growth boosters or scalp treatments such as the LaserComb in an individually designed treatment programme to achieve optimum results. The LaserComb is an FDA cleared device that emits low power laser light energy onto the scalp, boosting hair growth and strengthening and thickening existing hair. Belgravia’s specialists have found it an effective component of their treatment courses.
Clients are appointed a dedicated trichologist and treatment advisor to assist them throughout the treatment course. You can view some of our ‘before and during treatment’ photos here to see the kind of results we can achieve.
