Good nutrition is essential for healthy hair growth. Unfortunately, improving your diet alone will not stop or prevent male hair loss. Yet, by making sure that your diet is well-balanced and high in nutrients not only will you improve your general health – you’ll also give your hair new vitality.
Get your five a day
Make sure you get your five a day and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Bananas are rich in potassium and biotin, and citrus fruits (such as oranges) are high in vitamin C. Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach are rich in iron, magnesium and copper. Try to eat a ‘rainbow’ of fruits and vegetables – from red berries to green leaves, purple grapes to orange carrots. A hand full of alfalfa or bean sprouts on a fresh salad will be a nutritious, and delicious, addition.
Lean healthy protein
Ensure that your diet gives your body the protein it needs to by eating eggs, chicken, fish and lean red meat. These foods all contain essential amino acids which our body needs to be fit and healthy. Lean meat provides Vitamins B6, B12 and biotin, as well as iron and zinc. Dairy products are another valuable source of protein, as well as Vitamin A. Those on a vegan diet can achieve a protein rich diet by eating soybeans, tofu and lentils – all of which have high levels of iron.
Foods to avoid
Other general advice for a healthy diet include avoiding foods high saturated fats and highly processed foods. You may also want to watch your intake of salt. This is not because salt causes hair loss, but because it can cause high blood pressure. Too much alcohol can damage your hair, so be sure to watch how much you are drinking. Research has also found that alcohol affects nutrient levels and could lead to a deficiency in zinc, which could in turn lead to hair loss.
Remember, eating too much of any one food source can also be harmful and could create health problems which could lead to hair loss. It is best to aim for a well-rounded and nutritious diet.
Measures beyond diet
If you are worried about your hair thinning, not just its condition, you should get advice from a hair loss specialist. Depending on why you are experiencing hair loss and the stage of your progression, your best option to regain your hair will be through a bespoke combination of hair loss treatments to stabilise hair loss and reverse the effects.
According to the Belgravia Centre’s Senior Hair Loss Specialist, Leonora Doclis, male pattern baldness is “caused by Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and genetic factors.” She adds that “although a nutritious and varied diet can improve general health and help the quality of hair growth, it is unlikely to stimulate the hair to grow”.
At the Belgravia Centre we have achieved remarkable success by prescribing these treatments to our clients, in combination with our recommended hair growth boosters. Through our individually tailored treatment programmes our clients have been successfully able to manage their hair loss condition.
