If DHT Causes Hair Loss and Facial Hair Why Am I Losing My Hair But Have No Facial Hair?Name: Eric

Question: dht is responsible for both facial hair as male pattern baldness. i seem to be suffering from the latter but i lack any significant facial hair, how does this work?

Answer: Hi, Eric. You are correct in thinking that both scalp hair and facial hair is sensitive to both DHT and testosterone in those with a predisposition to male pattern hair loss.

However, even if you are seeing signs of genetic hair loss around the top of your head, this is completely separate to your face as the effect DHT has on facial hair depends on your distribution of receptors for DHT.

This is also why the effect of the popular male hair loss treatment tablet, finasteride 1mg is unpredictable on facial hair.

Why it is possible for men to have, or not have, facial hair and yet still experience male hair loss is one of the mysteries of genetics. Experts describe it as a ‘paradox’ that DHT helps to grow body hair during puberty but it makes you lose hair on the top in the form of pattern baldness, and the definite reason behind this remains, as yet, unknown.

Hi, I was hoping someone could elaborate on your statement that finasteride is "unpredictable" in relation to facial hair. I recently started finasteride and I also have very poor facial hair( age 24). In both sides of my family all men had strong facial hair young. Was hoping the finasteride would not affect my facial hair development. Do you think it will? Thankyou

Sarah Belgravia

Hi Lance, finasteride 1mg had no effect on facial hair or body hair during its initial research so it is highly unlikely to affect facial hair though as you are not a Belgravia client you should consult your hair loss treatment provider for further information.
