Question: With Belgravia’s hair loss treatment do you have to continue using the medication year after year? If it’s not a permanent fix I may look into a hair transplant.
Answer: Hi, Alex. It is definitely advised that you follow your course on an on-going basis to allow regrowth to develop and to maintain your results. The reason for this is due to the DHT which causes shedding from male pattern hair loss.
With any hair loss treatment programme the key is to be consistent. As androgenetic alopecia is a permanent condition with treatment available for its management, rather than a cure, once you stop using the treatments which inhibit DHT this will resume attacking the follicles (assuming you are experiencing genetic hair loss and therefore have an inbuilt sensitivity to DHT) so the hair will start to thin again.
What DHT, a testosterone by-product which has little to no use in the body after puberty, does in these cases is attach itself to the hair follicles around the top of the head and hairline. It progressively weakens the follicles, which in turn causes gradually thinning hair. If left untreated this can progress to baldness which is where the follicle dies completely.
There are two key MHRA licensed and FDA approved male pattern hair loss treatments which aim to stabilise this type of shedding and promote regrowth. Finasteride 1mg is a DHT inhibitor which is taken as a daily oral tablet. Minoxidil is a once or twice daily solution which is applied directly to the scalp where needed, as directed, and encourages blood flow to that area, nourishing the follicles and encouraging regrowth. In addition to these medications, supplementary hair growth supporting products can also be used, as required. A consultation with a hair specialist can help you to navigate the available choices in order to find the best hair loss solution for you.
Some men choose to follow treatment plans for many years whilst others choose to use treatments just until they are comfortable enough to accept their thinning. How long men use our treatments for is entirely up to them and a matter of personal choice, however, there are different levels of regrowth which need a certain timeframe to appear and these can vary depending on the severity of the hair loss when treatment is started. As such, we would generally recommend using them for at least 12 months in order to have the best chance of seeing positive results.
In terms of exploring the option of a hair transplant, if you are over 25 and want to consider this, following a free hair loss consultation at one of our centres or online, we can put you in touch with our highly respected hair restoration partner.
It is worth noting, however, that many top surgeons recommend men wanting to undergo surgical restoration procedures follow a pharmaceutical hair loss treatment course for at least six months prior to their operation and again, on an on-going basis afterwards. This is initially to stabilise shedding and make the hair easier for the specialist to work with. Treatment is used as aftercare following a transplant in order to preserve results by maintaining the hair around the transplanted area. Due to DHT attacks on the head continuing after surgery, it is important to manage this so that the hair surrounding the new grafts does not shed, leaving an unnatural looking ‘island’ of transplanted hair.
