How Has Harry Redknapp Kept His Hairline?

Looking at photographs of Harry Redknapp being interviewed on his doorstep following his dismissal from his position as head coach at Tottenham Hotspur, it is apparent that regardless of his personal difficulties, his hairline has escaped relatively unscathed. In fact, pictures from the time before he started at Tottenham show that his hair is almost completely unchanged in the intervening four years.

At the age of 65, around two thirds of men will have experienced some form of hair loss, with many losing a significant amount of their natural growth particularly if their everyday lives are prone to stress. Although showing signs of a receding hair line, the rest of Redknapp’s hair appears to be particularly resistant to age. Is it possible that he is doing something to help retain his hairline?

Beating the off-side age trap

Age-related hair loss in men tends to be caused by a condition known as Androgenic Alopecia (or male pattern balding). Caused by a genetic predisposition, Androgenic Alopecia causes testosterone to be converted into a secondary chemical which attacks the hair follicles in the scalp. The hair attached to these follicles then falls out, resulting in a receding hair line or bald patches, particularly around the crown.

Shooting through stress

Stress is also widely believed to be a contributory factor to hair loss, manifesting itself either as acceleration of genetic hair loss, or through a temporary stress-related condition known as Telogen Effluvium (although this is much more prevalent in females).

Redknapp’s period at Tottenham has not been exactly smooth: he has come through a number of situations which would have seen many men tearing their own hair out! A high profile court case on charges of tax fraud, a heart operation, and a string of poor performances by his club are instances which are likely to have caused increased levels of stress throughout the past four years. However, judging by Redknapp’s full head of hair, these high levels of pressure have not had an effect on his natural growth.

What is Redknapp’s hair management strategy?

Some high-profile footballers, such as Wayne Rooney, have undergone hair transplant operations in a bid to repair hair loss, but the results can be dramatic, unsubtle and variable. Redknapp’s hairline has not changed at all, ruling out the possibility that he has had any kind of surgical intervention.

It is entirely possible that Redknapp has been using other methods, such as hair loss treatments, to maintain a thick head of hair, but it is also equally possible that his hair has not felt the effects of aging and stress.
