Hair loss in women is affected primarily by genetics, but high stress levels can also be an important factor according to a new report published in the medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Women who experienced increased stress, who smoked, who had children and who had a history of hypertension and cancer were at greater risk of increased hair thinning, reported ASPS Member Surgeon Dr. Bahman Guyuron. Guyuron went on to say that modifying these factors may reduce the risk for women concerned about hair loss.
The researchers studied identical twins in order to explore non genetic factors in hair loss. As expected, higher testosterone levels were associated with increased hair loss, explained by the fact that the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) causes female pattern hair loss. However, researchers discovered that lifestyle factors also played a key part.
Why Are You Stressing?
Circumstances related to higher stress levels such as divorce, having lots of children and symptoms of depression and anxiety such as prolonged sleep, were cited as examples of factors that the researchers linked to hair loss.
Following on from this, medical risk factors such as smoking, not using sun protection, high blood pressure and diabetes were mentioned as other potential causes of hair loss. Dr Guyuron and his coauthors concluded that: “Many of the environmental factors discussed in this study…can be targeted by both patients and physicians as potential ways to augment hair loss prevention strategies.”
