Hair Loss - Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Stay in the sun and don't sweat it - you're hair's not going anywhere

A hair loss clinic in America has recently claimed that one of the most common causes of hair loss often goes undetected. Let me make it as plain as a white t-shirt to you that excessive sweating does not cause hair loss.

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that usually affects the hands, feet and underarms but may affect almost any bodily area. It causes excessive sweating, significant emotional and psychological distress and embarrassment but doesn’t pose a serious threat to health and won’t cause hair loss.

More than 80% of men and just under half the female population in the UK experience some degree of hair loss. Hyperhidrosis, which typically begins during the teenage years or early adulthood, is estimated to affect just 3% of people in England so there’s a pretty significant chance that someone who suffers from excessive sweating may also be subject to hair loss.

There is however, absolutely no scientific evidence to suggest that there is a link between the two conditions. The only notable exception is their psychological implications yet otherwise harmless natures.

Erkkie Harris-Wells, founder of the Miyohara International Trichology Clinic in California, would have you think otherwise.

“Hyperhidrosis accounts for about 70% of hair loss cases for both males and females,” she said in a press release.

It’s a well known fact that majority of male hair loss cases are caused by a genetic predisposition and sensitivity to DHT, a chemical derivative of testosterone that results in the miniaturisation of the hair follicles and gradual cessation of hair growth. Women’s hair loss is a lot more multi-factorial but still, the fact remains that there is no established link between sweat and hair loss.
