Nine women known as the ‘Hair Care bunch’ participated in a 15-hour walk around Nottingham to raise money for skin cancer charity, Skcin.
This inspiring group joined over 200 other women, together walking from 9.30am to 12 midnight all around Nottingham at the end of April in order to raise money and awareness for the charity. The walkers were quite a sight to behold, wearing bright, colourful outfits that were hard to miss.
The walk had a special significance for one of the Hair Care bunch, Donna Munks from The Works Hair and Beauty on White Hart Street in Mansfield.
“It is a cause close to my heart and all for fun,” said Donna, who explained that the salon had recently set up a ‘Care Clinic’ to help people experiencing hair loss after cancer treatment: “After seeing some of my very close friends and relatives being diagnosed by cancer and struggle with the terrible effects, you can’t help but say ‘what can I do to help?’.
“For some of us that is raising money to help with research or care by staging charity events, walks, coffee mornings or running half marathons.
“The night walk was great, 200 women, a few men and Sam Pinkham from Gem am radio walked and encouraged us on the whole way with just his speedos on! He must have been freezing. But he got over £2,000 for doing it.”
Though the walk was long, it was well worth it, with the Hair Care bunch raising an impressive amount for Skcin. Incredibly, one in seven people die from skin cancer every day in the UK, making it one of the most common and fastest rising forms of cancer.
Says Donna: “It was an amazing night for a great cause. We have so far raised £1,000 but the whole amount raised for Skcin was £25,000.
“And we still have other events to raise more money for cancer charities.”
Skcin is a charity whose mission is to educate and raise awareness on the subject of sun safety and the early detection of skin cancers. They have a particular focus on working with groups that are particularly susceptible to skin cancer by the nature of the activities they carry out.
The charity has worked on a number of successful campaigns educating the general public about sun safety. For more information about Skcin visit their website: www.skcin.org.
