It’s been a long time coming, but last night the world premier of the Great Gatsby movie happened in New York, and the star studded cast were out in force. Leonoardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and soundtrack creator Jay-Z all looked dapper in their suits on the red carpet.
Aged 38 and 37, DiCaprio and Maguire have around a 40% chance of experiencing hair loss, and at 43 Jay-Z would be looking at around the same statistic. However, all three men exhibited neat hairlines that did not appear to have noticeably receded, and whilst Jay-Z kept his usual shaved style, the two other men seemed to have thick, healthy hair.
No Red Carpet Recession
Of course, genetic hair loss doesn’t affect everyone, as the gene that causes the predisposition to male pattern hair loss is not carried by all of us (but can be passed down from either parent, even if they themselves don’t ‘express’ or show signs of loss themselves).
However, if either of the three men do carry the genes for hair loss and had previously noticed its onset, what might they have done to halt the rate of loss and regrow any thinning they may have been experiencing? Far from a hair transplant being the only option, a medical hair loss treatment programme could ensure that their hair was looked after.
Such a treatment programme would ideally contain both of the hair loss medications that have been licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA (the UK and US medical regulatory bodies respectively) as the two treatments are highly complementary when used as part of a hair loss treatment programme.
The first of these medications, Propecia, works by blocking DHT, the androgen that causes the hair loss in the first place by damaging follicles atop the scalp. As the follicles shrink as a result of the DHT, the hair they produce becomes thinner and weaker, until eventually no hairs at all can be grown. It’s vital to address the hair loss before follicles cease producing any hair, as at this point it can no longer be treated medically.
Don’t Spare The Hair Style
The second medication available to treat hair loss, minoxidil, comes in a variety of different strengths, allowing a hair loss specialist to establish the ideal combined daily dosage for the patient. Unlike Propecia, which is an oral tablet, minoxidil is applied directly onto the scalp twice daily, either as a clear liquid or a high strength minoxidil cream.
Belgravia Pharmacies also add certain ingredients to their minoxidil which appear to block DHT when applied locally. The medication and a variety of hair growth boosters can be administered by the patient in a matter of seconds in their home, meaning that a Belgravia treatment programme can be used (and delivered to) anywhere in the world.
If you’re unable to attend a consultation at either of our London clinics in person, you can complete an online diagnostic form, and a hair loss specialist will contact you with your diagnosis and treatment plan, with no obligation to buy.
