Formula One’s Little Known Fact: Eddie Jordan Wears Three Wigs

If you’ve been following Formula One motor racing recently then you can’t have missed that young Sebastian Vettel has now been crowned champion for the second consecutive season. Equally hard to miss are the wonderfully garish shirts and show-stealingly tight jeans of the BBC’s love-him-or-hate-him chief analyst, former F1 team boss and all-round good guy Eddie Jordan.

What even the most ardent fans of Formula One motorsport may have missed however is that the irrepressibly stylish Irishman wears a wig. In fact, he alternates between three different wigs.

Eddie Jordan may appear to be always immaculately coiffured when hanging out with Jake Humphrey, David Coulthard and the other BBC F1 boys, but he is actually entirely bald. Perhaps one reason that this has gone unnoticed by so many people for so long is that Jordan simulates his hair ‘growing’ in-between races by wearing wigs of different lengths.

Why is Eddie Jordan bald?

Though EJ’s baldness is not very well known, he makes no secret of it. Back in 2009 he told the Metro, “When I was young, I had a very serious accident: I broke both legs and damaged a nerve. I have alopecia and I got the right people to look after me. I’ve no problem with talking about that.”

It is not clear what the nature of this accident was or when it was sustained, but Jordan did break both legs in a motor racing accident during a stint driving in the Formula Ford championship in 1975, so this may well be the cause of his Alopecia.

Alopecia Areata is a hair loss condition which can affect both men and women. The exact causes of the condition are not known but it is widely thought to be brought about by stress, and by traumatic experiences and shocks, such as the accident suffered by Eddie Jordan.

Little Britain star Matt Lucas has also attributed his Alopecia hair loss to a car accident suffered when he was very young. In an interview some time ago with The Times, Lucas said that he believes his Alopecia Universalis, which started when he was six, was triggered by delayed shock from being knocked down by a vehicle when he was on holiday aged four.

Not the only form of hair loss

You don't have to be a formula one racing driver or a comedian to suffer from hair loss. And it's not always due to alopecia. Genetic hair loss, also known as male pattern baldness is very common and affects many men in a gradual and undramatic way. But it can be just as worrying. Happily, at the Belgravia Centre we have helped countless men to stop and even to reverse hair loss by using a variety of effective hairloss treatments.
