Name: Emma
Question: Hi. I want to know if you shed more hair when you first start using a lasercomb or other laser device. I am not using any other hair growth treatments or products. Thank you.
Answer: Hi, Emma. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) devices, including the HairMax LaserComb and LaserBand, all have an effect on the hair follicles.
Any hair loss treatment - whether medication or a device - that can impact the hair growth cycle has the potential to cause an initial shedding period when you first start to use it.
As with minoxidil shedding, and - for men - finasteride shedding - it does not affect everyone and, if it does, it may also be so minimal that you don't notice it, but everyone reacts differently.
If your hair loss seems to increase noticeably for a sustained period, we recommend seeking further advice, just to make sure everything is on track.
According to HairMax, the shedding period when first starting LLLT using one of its FDA-cleared devices should only last for the first few weeks.
The company advises, "Shedding is a natural phase of healthy hair growth. Treatment with the devices can cause some users to experience shedding during the first few weeks of use, as the laser energy causes the hair follicle to shed damaged hairs and regrow healthy ones. Shedding is actually a positive sign that the HairMax laser device is beginning to work to regrow new, healthy hair. If you were to stop using the device, your hair would return to where it was before you began treatment."
If you would like further advice on hair loss solutions for your specific concern, or choosing the right LLLT device for you, a consultation with a hair loss specialist - whether in person or online - may be beneficial.
They can talk you through the various options, including further hair growth supporting products which may be of interest.
