Faddy
Question: After applying minoxidil twice a day do we really need to shampoo every time after applying or we can shampoo once a week or twice a week?
Answer: Hi, Faddy. Not at all - it is not necessary to shampoo each time prior to applying minoxidil.
Washing your hair with a normal frequency is fine but it needs to be more than once per week and even twice a week may not be sufficient whilst you are using hair loss treatment if you have a Caucasian or Asian hair type. Afro hair can be washed less frequently as it has a different makeup which is better suited to washing around once per week.
This frequent cleansing is because you need to ensure you prevent a build up of minoxidil residue on the scalp. Without regular shampooing, this residue may build up and irritate the scalp or affect the absorption of subsequent minoxidil applications.
Shampooing every second day is often ideal to ensure your scalp remains clean although if you have an Afro hair type, perhaps try washing your hair once per week. Freshly washed hair also looks thicker so regular shampooing has the added benefit of creating the illusion of making thinning hair look fuller!
