Designer Pearl Lowe Discusses Hair Loss

She's known for being part of the Primrose Hill Set with Kate Moss and Sadie Frost, and for being mother to model Daisy Lowe, and designer Pearl Lowe is also famous for her personal style and fashion sense. However, the 43 year old has struggled with hair loss since the birth of her son Frankie in 1999.

The mother of four even developed a bald patch of about 5 cm in diameter on the left side of her head. "I would try to cover it with my remaining hair, but that was pretty thin, too" she told the Mail Online, adding: "‘It didn't get any better over the years, and when I washed it, I could see handfuls coming out at once."

Avoiding The Doctor

Her bald patch and thinning hair caused her much distress, and she felt compelled to wear a hair piece for special events, including her own wedding. She also felt self-conscious at photo shoots, despite extra hair being airbrushed in post-production. The designer avoided seeing her doctor, as she assumed that nothing could be done.

Pearl was certainly not alone in her assumption, as many women remain in the dark about the possible causes of hair loss, not to mention the possibility of treating it. However, when combined with dropping energy levels, brittle nails and other symptoms, Pearl decided to seek the advice of her doctor.

Helping Hair

Pearl's GP went ahead with some blood tests, which uncovered that not only was Pearl anaemic, she also had an underactive thyroid gland. Known as hyperthyroidism, the condition causes the body's system to run more slowly than it would otherwise do, meaning that people gain weight, feel the cold more than they normally would, experience low mood and often hair loss, too.

After being diagnosed, Pearl began treatment for her thyroid, but this didn't do much to help her hair. She now takes a nutritional supplement to help improve the condition of her locks. Should she wish to grow hair back and halt thinning, she could also consider a hair loss treatment plan.

For women with hair loss, there is only one clinically proven medical treatment available: minoxidil. Licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA, minoxidil is clinically proven for treating hair loss, and has achieved consistently good results for our female patients, something that's evident in their before and during treatment photographs.

A comprehensive hair loss treatment plan would include minoxidil at the appropriate dosage as decided by a hair loss specialist, either at a free consultation at one of our Central London clinics, or via an online diagnostic form for patients unable to attend in person. A variety of hair growth boosters would also be added to the bespoke plan as required, including our nutritional supplement Hair Vitalics: a mix of essential proteins, vitamins and other ingredients to keep hair looking its best.
