Denzel Washington, the two times Oscar winning star of movies such as American Gangster, The Manchurian Candidate and Training Day, appeared on ITV’s Lorraine this morning to chat with host Lorraine Kelly. The esteemed actor, who is also known for his theatre performances of Shakespeare, is nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in his latest film Flight. As awards season is well under way, should Washington be concerned about his apparent hair loss?
Up against Daniel Day Lewis, Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman and Joaquin Phoenix for the Best Actor statuette, it could well be that stress is the cause of Washington's thinning hair. Although we treat it regularly at The Belgravia Centre, an all-over thinning is not the most common type of hair loss in men. The most common reason behind male hair loss is a genetic condition called male pattern baldness, which manifests itself as a receding hair line, and/ or a thinning crown.
However, Washington's balding could be being caused by the condition Telogen Effluvium, which is usually caused by a sudden or severe stress. This stress causes hair follicles to prematurely stop growing, and subsequently enter the telogen, or resting stage. The hairs affected will usually stay in the telogen stage for three months before shedding, so it might be that a shock Washington experienced several months ago is the cause behind his recent hair loss.
Luckily for Denzel, hair loss due to Telogen Effluvium usually grows back after a few months, so he shouldn't worry about seeking treatment if his hair loss has happened recently. However, if Denzel has been experiencing the loss for a substantial amount of time, his hair might need a helping hand to grow back. Rather than having the added stress of a hair transplant, which is only necessary if the scalp is shiny and bald, the actor could try a bespoke hair loss treatment programme tailored to his type of shedding.
The key to treating Washington's type of hair loss is a twice-daily application of clinically proven hair loss medication minoxidil. The MHRA licensed formulation is applied to the affected areas twice a day, with particularly stubborn hair loss responding well to our unique high strength minoxidil 10% and 12.5% azelaic acid creams. Combined with a number of hair loss boosters, The Belgravia Centre has seen a vast amount of great results for men and women experiencing Telogen Effluvium.
