Belgravia’s ‘hair loss success stories’ blog category is frequently updated with comments written by happy Belgravia patients.  The posts also include the patients’ photo-scans and / or a profile shot showing the results that have been achieved during their treatment course so far.  The site was launched to give hair loss sufferers a real chance to see exactly what they can expect from the use of a Belgravia Centre treatment course first-hand from actual patients.

Success stories from happy hair loss patients are generally added on a daily basis so be sure to check-back frequently.

“I once read on the web that more than 80 percent of those who have signs of hair loss do not do anything about it. It is a popular belief that if hair loss is genetic nothing can be done about it. I did share this view for quite a while. Back in 2006, however, I started to worry about the first signs of hairloss on my head. It was not a drama. I was and I am still at the early stages of androgenetic hair loss but I thought that unlike the majority at least I should try to do something about it.

After surfing the web I had realised that there was not so much choice in my region but some promising hair loss treatments were available in Europe. Having a business trip to Old Blighty I started to look for a hair centre with a good reputation and credible evidence. The Belgravia Centre was one of those organisations that did not promise ‘miracles’ and I did particularly like its balanced approach to the topic of hairloss. Publications in the press and good coverage of the subject of hair loss on the web site had added to my decision to visit Belgravia.

I do not regret my decision: the clinic is a well established organisation with truly professional staff. I decided to try them and I believe it was the right choice. After about six months of use of Belgravia Centre hair loss treatments my friends and relatives noticed the difference. The hair became thicker and there was noticeable hair regrowth in the affected areas. There was no ‘miracle’, just proof that treatments do work!

I am now using Belgravia Centre treatments for the second year after a short break. The signs of hair loss, though reduced, are still there but one of the most important things about the use of Belgravia Centre treatments is the growing self-confidence. It may sound banal but your health and your looks are in your hands. Yes, after all, genetics and ageing may change your looks but unlike most of your peers you are doing something about it. Doing something with professionals who are trying to be honest with you does bring the results both tangible and most importantly intangible. Personally for me, the realisation of ‘doing something’ with your health and looks using good products of trustable quality, is a great feeling and I thank the specialists of Belgravia Centre for their contribution to it. I do recommend both Londoners and the visitors to ‘do something’ with the professionals of  Belgravia Hair Loss Centre.”

Diagnosis: Male Pattern Hair Loss

“I started to notice that my hair was becoming much thinner after leaving University in my early 20’s and although not overly concerned I did start to worry as my father is pretty much totally bald which up until this point I had never even considered that it would happen to me as I had always had a very thick head of hair.

Sadly things only got worse over the next few years and it was clear that my strong dose of denial wasn’t going to help rectify the situation. So, rather than accept the emigration of my once thick hair I started to research into what could be done (if anything) to reverse the process. The obvious thing appeared to be a hair transplant but this to be honest just scared me to death as I have heard many horror stories of botched transplants.

So, I looked more into the non surgical route and that was when I came across the Belgravia Centre website. I had a read through the testimonials and checked out some before and after shots and I have to say I was very impressed and thought what the hell I am going to give this a go.

So, fast forward a couple of years on treatments from the Belgravia centre and my hair is now noticeably thicker and there is still lots of new growth coming through so I don’t think that I am done yet. If you stick with it you will see results, just don’t expect it to happen overnight, after all your hair didn’t go thin overnight so give it a chance, I did and do not regret it.”

Hair Loss Belgravia CentreThe Daily Mirror today contacted one of the Belgravia Centre’s senior trichologists, Leonora Doclis, to request some expert advice on Naomi Campbell’s current hair condition. Recent photos show that Naomi’s parting seems to be wider than normal and the Mirror assumed this was caused by some form of hair loss.  Leonora advised that this possible hair loss could be caused by excessive pulling on the hair, but there is no way to tell conclusively by a photo alone.

Leonora told the Mirror, “There is a possibility that Ms Campbell could be experiencing a condition called traction alopecia but, if so, it is a very mild case.

“Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by excessive and long-term pulling on the hair follicles. This can be due to hair extensions or weaves and results in deterioration of the hair’s thickness. It is possible to repair this condition by the use of certain treatments but the results depend on the severity of the condition and extent of the hair loss.”

Alopecia Areata of some form affects 2-3 per cent of people worldwide at some point in their lives. The condition involves small patches of hair being lost suddenly for most people, but for many it can develop into large areas of hair loss on the scalp and occasionally, loss of all hair on the head (Alopecia Totalis) or loss of all head and body hair (Alopecia Universalis).

Football Referee Pierluigi Collina

Former international football referee Pierluigi Collina is one of the most famous faces that experiences Alopecia Universalis

In this post I wanted to talk to you about the success we see when treating mild-to-moderate Alopecia Areata. Although There has been no treatment officially approved by the FDA for the treatment of Alopecia Areata, we find that most cases of patchy hair loss we see at Belgravia are improved up by the use of topical applications of high strength minoxidil.

The most common treatment for Alopecia is steroid injections to the scalp. Not only is this an invasive and highly uncomfortable procedure, but from what we have seen the success is no better than that seen from the use of high strength minoxidil for growing back patches of Alopecia. You can see the kind of results experienced by Belgravia’s clients by taking a look through our Alopecia Areata Treatment Success Stories. All of these patients were treated with a high strength minoxidil.

Alopecia Areata treatment using high strength minoxidil involves applying it directly to the bald patches once a day, probably before bed depending on the user’s preference, which takes between 20-30 seconds. Hair will usually begin to grow back within 3 to 6 months of starting treatment if it is used consistently, as directed. As soon as the hair re-grows fully, treatment can be stopped and the hair will usually remain without the need for further treatment.

If you are experiencing Alopecia Areata please give us a call on 020 7730 6666 or send us an email at info@belgraviacentre.com with any questions you have, or if you would like to arrange a free, no obligation consultation – we’ll be more than happy to assist you. Alternatively, treatment can be prescribed for Alopecia Areata without the need to visit the centre – all you have to do is complete our online consultation form. As soon as the form is submitted, another Belgravia trichologist or I will diagnose your condition and recommend the most effective course of treatment, after which you will be contacted by one of our advisors who will take you through your personalised list of recommended options and answer any questions you may have.

Like men, many women will experience hair loss at some point in their lives. But female hair loss can be helped!  There are various hair loss solutions that can help to prevent shedding and promote hair regrowth, depending on the condition.

The causes of women’s hair loss are more diverse than those of men’s; with men it’s generally a genetic condition, yet with women, hair fall is usually caused by one or more of the following conditions:

Female Pattern Hair Loss

Common womens hair loss conditions areas of the scalp affected thinning hair baldness women's Belgravia Centre

Areas of the scalp affected by specific women’s hair loss conditions

The first is genetic hair loss, otherwise known as female pattern hair loss which is hair loss confined to the top area of the head. Many people do not realise that women produce the hormone ‘testosterone’ just like men, only in smaller amounts.  For women who suffer from female pattern hair loss it doesn’t mean that they have more testosterone in their body than other women, but that the balance between testosterone and an enzyme called ‘5-alpha reductase’ is not evenly weighted – when this is the case a hormone derivative called ‘dihydrotestosterone’ is produced which is what attaches itself to the follicles and causes hair to be shed.

Belgravia offers treatments for female pattern hair loss including clinically-proven hair loss solutions shown to stabilise this type of hair thinning and promote regrowth.

Telogen Effluvium

The second hair thinning issue that is commonly found in women is Telogen Effluvium. This is a temporary hair loss condition that is caused by a sudden event such as stress, shock, illness or an operation, and the hair loss is usually spread diffusely over the whole scalp.

Telogen Effluvium causes the hair to be shed approximately three months after the event, so much of the time it can be shocking for the person experiencing the condition and hard to pin-point the cause. The reason that the hair loss is experienced three months later is that, when the event takes place, the hair is passed into the ‘telogen’ phase – the resting phase of a hair’s life. The telogen stage lasts for three months before hair fall occurs and the hair growth cycle starts again.

Telogen Effluvium treatment is not always required as the hair will usually grow back on its own, with a bout of this condition generally lasting no more than six months. We do, however, usually advise treatment as a precaution for a couple of reasons – first of all, if the cause of the hairloss is on-going (on-going stress / illness etc.) then the hair will carry on shedding without treatment.  Secondly, much of the time Telogen Effluvium can trigger female pattern hair loss in those women (or men) who are prone to it. Once the hair has regrown, Belgravia hair specialists advise stopping treatment to see if the hair carries on shedding. If it does, treatment can be continued, otherwise it can be stopped permanently as it means female pattern hair loss was not triggered and the telogen effluvium is not ongoing.

Diffuse Hair Loss aka Chronic Telogen Effluvium

The final condition that is frequently experienced by women is diffuse hair loss.  The condition involves an increased rate of hair fall and subsequent thinning from all over the scalp, which tends to last for at least six months.

For those experiencing Diffuse Hair Loss, diet should be checked for adequate intake of nutrients. Clinical investigations should be made for thyroid, haemoglobin and hormonal problems. Stress may also be a contributing factor in Chronic Telogen Effluvium.

Women with this condition will usually be advised to visit their doctor in order to discover the underlying cause but treatment can be an effective solution for this temporary hair loss issue, whilst the underlying cause is being researched.

Post-Partum Alopecia

The phenomenon of experiencing hair loss after having a baby – a condition known as Postpartum Alopecia – is both normal and extremely common.

During pregnancy, the active growth phase of a woman’s hair growth cycle is extended, but once she has given birth, the cycle starts to resume its normal activity and this includes an extended shedding period.

It is absolutely nothing to worry about and, in most cases, although treatment is possible if desired, the hair will generally return to its pre-pregnancy state within 12 months.

Traction Alopecia

With the popularity of tight hairstyles, such as braids and high ponytails, as well as the increased use of hair extensions, wigs and weaves, hair loss from Traction Alopecia is on the increase.

Traction Alopecia occurs when taut and/or weighty hairstyles are worn too regularly and add excessive tension to the hair follicles. This then causes hair loss, usually around the hairline and at the temples as these are the areas that bear the brunt of the strain.

In mild cases, removing the problematic styles and wearing the hair naturally may help the hair to recover naturally over time, whilst in moderate cases Traction Alopecia treatment may be worthwhile considering. Where the scalp skin has taken on a smooth, shiny appearance – particularly where the condition has been present without intervention for a long time – this can mean there will be permanent baldness in these affected areas.

The Belgravia Centre london clinic Womens hairloss treatmentBelgravia hair loss specialists will recommend the most appropriate treatments for each individual based on their condition, level and pattern of shedding and medical profile. Factors such as lifestyle requirements may also be taken into consideration in order to tailor the optimum hair loss treatment course, generally comprising both medicinal and non-pharmaceutical therapies and hair growth supporting products – that the patient feels comfortable and confident in using.

We understand that hair loss in women can be emotionally difficult and many of those affected may have trouble confronting the situation, finding it hard to talk about.  All our staff are extremely understanding and, please remember, we see many, many women suffering from all kinds of hair loss issues every day, so it is something we are used to and empathetic towards.

Good afternoon from Korea. Just to let your team know that after using your treatment for 6 weeks my hair is growing back slowly and steadily. My bald patches are not as noticable and sightly as before and my confidence has been restored.

Thanks you for your centre’s support. I have been reccomending Belgravia to colleagues here at Hankuk University where I am teaching for a year.

Question: If I were to undergo a course of high strength minoxidil to grow hair – could I maintain that growth with finasteride 1mg and or a Laser Comb combination or will the new hair disappear immediately after I stop using the Minoxidil? If the latter is the case… why might this happen?

Answer: Hi, Len. In many cases, cutting down to just one medication may maintain the hair that has been restored from the combination of both medications, but this is something that we usually advise a trial period for. This could be for a period of three to six months or 12 months – it depends on your specific situation.

Everyone can react differently and it depends on many additional factors – including your medical profile and whether you are particularly exposed to any health, environmental or lifestyle triggers which may influence your rate of shedding. It also depends on the pattern and level of hairloss you are currently experiencing.

As such, changing up the components of your hair loss treatment course is best done under the supervision of and with the advice of your doctor, treatment provider or hair specialist. Should the trial period go well, you can obviously continue on your new regimen, but if you start to notice increased shedding, noticeably thinning hair or any other negative changes as a result of this change, you have the option to restart after you have been medically cleared to do so.

One thing that is worth mentioning is that a LaserComb is unlikely to treat hair loss if used on its own. In order to actively treat male pattern baldness we recommend using at least one of the only two clinically proven, MHRA licensed and FDA approved genetic hair loss treatments for men. A low-level laser therapy (LLLT) device, such as the FDA-cleared HairMax LaserComb can be a useful addition to these medications – either/or, or both – as it can help to stimulate the follicles, but we would not recommend trying to maintain regrowth using solely this approach. If you went from using one or two clinically-proven treatments to none, it is likely that shedding of the hair growth you have seen may occur within a few months.

We hope this information is helpful but do urge you to seek personal advice that takes into account your medical history and other factors we cannot discern from the information you have provided here, in order to get the most accurate guide for your specific case of hair loss.

cornrows traction alopecia hair loss tight hairstyles extensions braidsQuestion: I am an afro-caribbean 26 year old woman and have had my hair in a cornrow style since I was about 12 years old. Where the hair has been pulling there are areas of hair loss that are getting wider and wider. How can I stop this?

Answer: Hi there. The type of hair loss you describe is a common issue where tight hairstyles have been worn repeatedly. It is also frequently seen in women of colour due to Afro textured hair being naturally brittle and popular protective hairstyles within the Black community, such as cornrows, contributing to this condition.

It is called Traction Alopecia and it is the result of excessive strain placed on the hair follicles, with hair loss and breakage often concentrated around the sites where styles are fixed, as well as at the hairline and temples, which may start to recede.

The first, and most obvious step to stop hair loss in this instance is to remove the source of the issue – your cornrows. This should prevent the balding areas from expanding. Try to give your follicles a break by wearing your hair naturally without any additional tension from other problematic hairstyles or weight – for example, from hair extensions.

Although in many cases Traction Alopecia can be prevented, when it does occur whether hair regrowth is possible or not depends on the extent of the damage to the follicles.

A consultation with a hair loss specialist should be enough to determine whether your follicles are likely to respond to a course of Traction Alopecia Treatment, though a quick way to tell in many cases is by the appearance of the scalp in the affected areas. If the scalp is smooth and shiny – truly bald – in places, this indicates the follicles are no longer functioning and hair growth is unlikely. Where there is thinning or damaged hair, however, there is still hope that regrowth may be possible with the right approach, as it is a sign that the follicles are capable of producing hair.
