Lou Gehrig The Belgravia Centre

Lou Gehrig – the stricken baseball star

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health have discovered a link between early balding and the rare condition Lou Gehrig’s disease. Also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Lou Gehrig’s disease is characterised by muscle wastage, weakness, and eventually a complete loss of movement.

Comprehensive baldness study

The researchers interviewed 50,000 American men aged between 46 and 81, asking them about the shape of their hairline when they were 45. The interviewees were presented with photos depicting no balding, moderate and extensive hair loss and asked to choose which most closely represented their hairlines.

16 years later researchers again interviewed 5,500 men who had reported extensive hair loss in the initial survey. 11 of the men had since been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease.  The researchers also found that 13 of the 17,500 men who reported no balding aged 45 had also been diagnosed with ALS.

Early balding an early ALS indicator?

Based on these findings, the Harvard researchers believe that men with extensive balding at an early age are three times more likely to develop Lou Gehrig’s disease than those who do not. The team did however urge medical professionals and concerned men to treat the findings with caution as some of the participants in the study still developed ALS despite avoiding early hair loss.

It also has to be remembered that Lou Gehrig’s disease is an extremely rare condition. In the US there are just 5600 diagnoses made each year from a population of nearly 317 million people. As such, men experiencing early balding are more likely to be losing their hair as a result of another condition.

The most common cause of hair loss across the world remains Male Pattern Balding, also known as Androgenic Alopecia. A genetic condition, Androgenic Alopecia is caused by hormones known as androgens that interact with hair follicles in the scalp to inhibit hair growth. Over time hair follicles affected by the androgens produce weaker and thinner hair, before all growth stops completely. As more and more hair follicles are affected in this way, the development of bald patches becomes more obvious.

Treating hair loss

Balding can be treated extremely successfully through a complete hair loss treatment program that couples proven medications with complementary therapies and dietary advice. For men experiencing early onset balding, a good quality treatment plan can halt or reverse hair loss.

The link between Lou Gehrig’s disease and baldness seems fairly well established, further underlining the importance of seeking professional advice early when experiencing hair loss. Although the chances of developing ALS are mercifully slim, by getting an early diagnosis of hair loss, men and women can begin a treatment plan to encourage natural hair regrowth tailored to their specific condition and needs. The earlier a treatment plan is started, the more likely it is to be successful in growing new hair.

Viking Hair The Belgravia CentreThe Viking Age lasted from 800 AD to 1050 AD, during which time the people of Scandinavia – the Vikings – travelled vast areas of Europe for trade and conquest. Ships captained by these talented and tough explorers reached what is now Turkey and Russia, and some even reached North America.

The Old Norse way of life has recently seen a surge in popularity with the release of the History channel’s epic drama Vikings – a serial that tracks the life and achievements of Danish folk hero Ragnar Lodbrok. Played by Australian hunk Travis Fimmel, Ragnar is depicted as a wolf-eyed leader of men, hungry for conquest. The sides of his head are shaved, while the hair on top is left to grow long, before being braided. Ragnar’s appearance is consistent with our typical image of Vikings as well-muscled raiders, with thick beards and a mess of hair under their helmets – but could the Viking’s way of life actually raise the risk of hair loss?

A stressful way of life

Vikings led very tough lives. Although the TV show exaggerates the degree of violence, it was certainly the case that the Dark Ages were more dangerous times than those in which we now live. The risk of death from raiding, disease, famine, and exposure was all too real, and daily life was characterised by a struggle for survival. All this was exceptionally stressful, and there is a well-defined relationship between stress and hair loss. To make matters worse, the Vikings existed at a time well before the discovery of Vitamin C, so if your stores were not well stocked with preserved vegetables and fruit during winter or a long sea voyage, there was a very real possibility of hair loss as result of scurvy.

Hair loss from helmets?

If the Viking lifestyle increased the risk of losing one’s hair, what about their hair styles and choice of head gear? When going into battle, Vikings wore helmets, and during times of peace they tended to braid their hair into complex patterns.

The good news is that helmets do not cause hair loss. Even though they might rub on the scalp from time to time, the effect of this on the hair follicles themselves would be negligible. In fact, wearing a helmet might actually prevent hair loss: in a battle situation, flesh wounds to the scalp from swords or clubs might lead to the formation of scar tissue; leaving permanent bald patches. Braids, however, can cause hair loss – in a form known as Traction Alopecia – although the loose braids favoured by Vikings would have been less likely to lead to hairloss symptoms.

Hair loss today

Fortunately, people in this day and age do not have to worry about malnutrition to the same degree as the Vikings. The threat of violence is also much lower, however the stresses of a high-pressured working environment can contribute to modern-day hair loss. The Belgravia Centre helps thousands of men and women regrow their hair, using a 21st Century approach of proven medications, on-going monitoring and hair growth supplements. Take a look at our gallery and success stories to see how we might be able to help you too.

cooling cap glenn paxman hair loss cancerA man who invented the cooling cap, which can be used by cancer patients to help prevent hair loss from cancer treatment, has made a list of six inspiring people that Michael Hayman, the co-founder of StartUp Britain, has credited with “changing lives”.

Glenn Paxman was inspired both by his father Eric, who created the beer cooler, and his wife Susie, who sadly passed away from cancer at the age of just 34. Seeing how devastated Susie was when she lost her hair during chemotherapy, Glenn went about finding a way to prevent other women having to go through the same ordeal when tackling their illness.

An Inspirational Invention

True to his word, the first prototype of the cooling cap was made available at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in 1997, and Paxman Coolers, Glenn’s company, was formed in 1998.

Based on the fact that 8 per cent of women with cancer reject chemotherapy because they don’t want to lose their hair, Glenn’s innovation could be said to be lifesaving, as well as a welcome relief for many women concerned about hair loss.

Around 70 per cent of patients who use Paxman’s systems do not need a wig, and Paxman has helped many thousands of cancer sufferers in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and South America. He is now expanding the business into the North American and Japanese markets.

Hair Loss from Cancer Treatment

Hair loss from cancer treatment cannot be treated using a medically-based hair loss treatment plan. However, this type of hair loss should always be temporary, and hair should begin to regrow in the months following the end of the treatment.

For women whose hair has failed to regrow to its previous thickness, it may be that the onset of female pattern hair loss has been triggered by the illness or its treatment, or has coincided with the hair loss from cancer treatment.

Hair loss in women that is due to genetics can be treated with minoxidil, a topical treatment that is best used as part of a hair loss treatment plan that contains a variety of treatment boosters to ensure overall hair health. Regular clinical monitoring also ensures that treatment is progressing well, and Belgravia clients often find that where hair loss is particularly stubborn, a recommended high strength minoxidil product available from the range at our in-clinic pharmacies can help.

Jane Seymour long hairLast week, Queen Elizabeth’s personal stylist, Ian Carmichael, said that said that women in their 40s, 50s and beyond are wrong in thinking that cutting their hair shorter will help them turn back the clock or save them from looking like mutton dressed as lamb.

The royal hairstylist added that many celebrities would have lost their sex appeal years ago if they’d chopped their hair short, giving the example of James Bond actress Jane Seymour, 62, as an older woman who has made the long-haired look work for her.

Time to Break the Trend

So why do women often cut their hair shorter as they age? Whilst for some it’s a simple case of preferring a short style due to the appearance of it compared to long hair, or finding short locks easier to maintain, many women feel forced to cut their hair short due to a decline in their hair’s thickness.

Hair loss in women after the menopause is very common, and the condition is known as female pattern hair loss. This type of excess shedding occurs due to a genetic predisposition, whereby we inherit the genes for baldness from our family tree.

Pattern hair loss in women usually occurs diffusely over the top of the scalp. If you’ve noticed your hair thinning in this area (as supposed to all over the scalp, which means you may have telogen effluvium) a hair loss treatment plan is needed to prevent further thinning, as this type of hair loss will not regrow by itself and will gradually worsen.

For women, there is only one medication that has been licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA to treat hair loss: minoxidil. This topical treatment is available in a variety of strengths, allowing a hair loss specialist to select the best dosage for the severity of your hair loss, up to a high strength minoxidil cream for stubborn shedding.

Thick Hair Post-Menopause

As well as varying the strength of our minoxidil, Belgravia combine various added ingredients with the formulations, such as azelaic acid and Medroxyprogesterone, which appear to block DHT when applied locally. DHT is an androgen hormone that causes hair loss on account of follicular miniaturisation in those with a genetic disposition, and blocking it gives follicles the change to recover.

Whilst DHT is the culprit behind male pattern hair loss, for women it is usually a combination of DHT sensitivity and other hormones and deficiencies such as low levels of iron. It is also important to undergo blood tests to rule out other causes such as faulty thyroid function.

At Belgravia we combine your ideal formulation of minoxidil with a variety of treatment boosters such as the FDA cleared Laser Comb and nutritional supplement Hair Vitalics to ensure all approaches to treating hair loss and keeping hair healthy are covered. We also offer advice and support seven days a week, in person and by phone or over email.

miley cyrus long hair extensionsShe’s reinvented herself as a bottle blonde rock chic, but former teen star Miley Cyrus was previously known for being the epitome of the wholesome American girl, her hair worn long and either curly or super-straight as she starred in her hit Hannah Montana TV series.

However, the star has just revealed in a recent interview that her lush locks were not her own, and were actually fake. Speaking about her old Harper’s Bazaar cover which depicts Miley carrying a guitar case, her hair flowing behind her, the 20 year old said: “That was all fake! That’s my simple life yet I have like 350 extensions in my hair. That was not real. None of it was ever real. None of it was ever growing out of my head.”

“That was all fake!”

Miley caused a stir almost a year ago when she chopped her locks off and bleached her short crop of hair. Whilst bleaching hair can dry it out, causing breakage and therefore an overall thinning, it shouldn’t impact hair that is yet to grow. There is a slight risk of hair loss due to allergic reaction to the dye (hence why doing a patch test is important) and burns from dye chemicals being left on too long, but if you use as instructed hair dye should not cause hair loss.

Hair extensions, on the other hand, can cause more long term damage. A condition known as traction alopecia can occur as a result of using extensions for a considerable amount of time. This happens because extensions put undue pressure on the hair follicle on account of their weight, which over time can damage the follicle to the extent that hair is no longer produced.

Damage Control

If you’re noticing that your natural hair is becoming thinner in the places where extensions are usually attached, the first step is to cease using the extensions (and if they’re clip on, make sure you give your hair plenty of breaks in between their use, if ceasing using them altogether is not an option).

For women worried about thinning hair, there is a clinically proven hair loss medication available to them that has been licensed by the FDA and approved by the MHRA. Minoxidil, which comes in the form of a liquid or a high strength minoxidil cream, is applied directly to the thinning areas, allowing for highly targeted treatment.

Minoxidil has produced great results for Belgravia patients with traction alopecia, some examples of which can be seen here, here and here. As well as deciding on your ideal daily dosage of minoxidil and combining it with certain added ingredients that can help prevent further hair loss, a hair loss specialist will select certain hair growth boosters to form a truly comprehensive hair loss treatment plan.

george bush senior shaves head for cancer patient patrickAfter learning that the two year old son of a member of his security team was battling leukaemia, former president George Bush Snr decided to shave his head as part of a charity effort to raise money for Patrick’s cancer treatment.

Members of the former leader’s secret service detail have also been going bald for the good cause, after a staff member got the ball roiling by agreeing to shave his head in support of Patrick if someone would donate $500 to Patrick’s Pals. Whilst Patrick’s prognosis is “very positive” according to the website, it is expected that their will be years of treatment ahead.

Bald for a Great Cause

President Bush and his wife Laura lost their infant daughter Robin to leukaemia a number of decades ago in 1953, which may have influenced Bush’s decision to join the fundraising effort. The fundraising team’s website states that they will also be taking part in a motorcycle benefit run. You can donate online by following this link.

Needless to say, Bush’s gesture went down well online, with current President Barack Obama’ s office tweeting a picture of Bush and Patrick, urging supporters to show their support. Bill Clinton also chimed in, saying that he loved what Bush was doing and that he “looked great”.

Sadly, hair loss from cancer treatment cannot be treated medically, although hair should regrow in the months following the treatment course. The reason behind hair loss from chemotherapy is that the drugs used to attack the cancer cells often kill certain healthy cells along the way, such as hair cells. By preventing the hair cells from dividing, cancer drugs progressively lead to hair thinning and as the shaft breaks away from the scalp, severe hair loss.

Hair Loss from Cancer

For radiotherapy, high-energy radiation rays can damage the hair follicles when they are directed onto the scalp and cause the hair to fall out. Depending on the amount of radiation therapy received, hair loss can in some circumstances be permanent.

Natural hair growth will resume within a year for 75% of patients whose cancer treatments lead to hair loss. There is also, for certain patients who are receiving chemotherapy, the option to use a relatively new piece of technology called the cooling cap which can help to prevent hair loss. The caps work by reducing the blood supply carrying the chemotherapy chemicals to the scalp, meaning less hair cells are damaged.

beyonce hair trapped in fan at concert montrealShe’s been delighting fans across the world with her Mrs Carter tour, where Beyoncé has been teaming her impressive vocal range with some killer dance moves. However, things didn’t go quite to plan at a recent performance that saw the megastar encounter a problem on the Montreal leg of her tour, when her hair got stuck in a fan when she hopped down from the stage to get closer to her delighted fans.

As she belted out the words to her hit song Halo, the 31 year old managed to draw on her professionalism when she became unwittingly attached to the giant fan, and didn’t miss a line. Forever able to laugh at herself, the former Destiny’s Child star posted a clip on her Instagram page of the incident, that saw her aides rush to help her wrestle her hair back from the fan’s blades.

Bey’s Biggest Fan

As a minder quickly snipped Queen Bey free from her fan situation, we hope that she didn’t experience too much pain from the incident. Indeed, the star appeared to be in good spirits after the show, even posting some alternative lyrics to her song Halo about the fan incident on Instagram.

Luckily for Beyoncé, having hair pulled out on one occasion shouldn’t result in permanent hair loss. There is anecdotal evidence online about hair being pulled out aggressively (by another in a fight, for instance) and this causing long term changes in how hair grows, but there is no substantial proof that tearing hair out means it won’t grow back.

However, if the scalp is damaged, then problems with hair growth become more likely. A local injury can trigger the autoimmune disorder alopecia areata in those who are already susceptible. This is because cells under physical stress can produce heat shock proteins (HSP’s). It has recently been found that cells also produce these proteins after exposure to other forms of stress such as inflammation. These proteins have been implicated in the autoimmune diseases including alopecia areata.

Queen of Big Hair

It’s also true that certain hair styling techniques from bleaching to tight hair styles can damage the scalp. If the damage scars (which can occur overtime with traction alopecia) hair will not be able to be regrown, so it’s important to ensure no harsh styling techniques are repeatedly used. But again, unless the damage is severe, such as a chemical burn, a one-off event won’t usually cause long term hair loss.

When hair is torn out, it should regrow in around six months following the incident. However, if you’re noticing a general thinning of hair atop the scalp that isn’t necessarily where the original hair loss occurred, it may be that female pattern hair loss has onset. Should this be the case, the only licensed and approved female hair loss medication minoxidil should be used to regrow the thinning hair, along with close monitoring as part of a hair loss treatment plan.

Minoxidil-5-+-Minoxidil-12.5-Medium-Small3Question: I used to buy minoxidil 5% PPG free from a US web site. I tried regular minoxidil solutions in the past and they irritated my scalp a great deal. Then I switched to a PPG free product in liquid form (using glycerine instead) and I have been quite comfortable with it. Lately I have been having difficulty finding a suitable product as I understand there are some issues with the FDA in the US with custom-made minoxidil products. Can you offer me a similar product – a PPG free minoxidil solution in liquid form?

Answer: Belgravia is able to provide liquid minoxidil containing glycerine instead of PPG either with azelaic acid, or MPG, which are added ingredients that appear to block DHT when applied locally.

Minoxidil is prescription only, and requires either a free consultation in person at one of our clinics or the completion of an online consultation form to ensure your suitability for the treatment. Once this has been approved, the hair loss treatment programme, including the minoxidil, can be posted out to you.

lichen-planusName: Ms Gebreab

Question: I visited your branch at Victoria a while ago. I was told that the problem I had should be dealt with my GP. I have now got a name for my problem. A biopsy was taken from the front of my hair line and diagnosed with Lichen Planus! Anyway, I just wondering if you have any treatment for this kind of problem?
Thanks for your help so far.

Answer: Lichen Planus is an autoimmune condition that causes a patchy scarring form of hair loss. When the follicles scar it is impossible for the hair to grow back. For this reason, I’m afraid, we do not treat the condition at Belgravia, as our hair loss treatments are only effective if the hair follicle has not completely ceased to produce hair.

Regaine-FoamName: Robert

Question: Why is there an age limit of 65 years for use of minoxidil?

Answer: Hi, Robert. It is the manufacturers of Regaine that can give the real answer as to why they put an age limit on their minoxidil product. However, we can guess that perhaps the manufacturers of Regaine put this as a safety net since it is an over-the-counter medication.

A lot of possible users over the age of 65 may have some form of disease or heart problems that may make them unsuitable for minoxidil, and unless they see a hair loss specialist or doctor to discuss their suitability for the medication, mitigating health issues may not be picked up on. This age limit simply means that you need a doctor‘s prescription before you can use Regaine.

The Belgravia Centre offers minoxidil to people between the ages of 16 and 70 years, subject to an examination or online consultation.
