Aloe vera has long been revered as the healing plant and known for its miraculous nourishing, softening and moistening effects. More recently however, some of those promoting the herbal product say it’s got hair growth powers as well.

The herbal powers of Aloe Vera are said to extend to the treatment of hair lossAloe vera, native to Northern Africa, took the cosmetic world by storm and it’s evolving into the hair care industry. Its historical use dates back over 5000 years and to evidence that it was a herbal remedy used in embalming mummies, both as a preservative as well as a preventive agent against tuberculosis and other respiratory complications. Apparently Native Americans and people of the Caribbean region have also been using aloe vera for centuries to improve the quality of their hair.

It is alleged to stimulate hair growth by promoting scalp health, balancing pH levels and cleansing the pores. However, while it may well improve the quality of the hair you’ve got, it doesn’t show much promise as a solution to hair loss.

A lot of the time, marketing efforts are overstretched on hair loss products that have no scientific evidence. It’s said that aloe vera’s anti-inflammatory, nourishing and soothing properties help stimulate new hair growth and help to prevent hair loss but there are no clinical studies that indicate that aloe vera would be an effective treatment for hair loss.

Perhaps as part of a combination course of treatments to tackle hair loss, aloe vera could be beneficial. It won’t be the main attraction and it’s definitely not going to be the active ingredient to help stabilise and reverse hair loss, but it does have valuable properties that can help maintain a healthy scalp. The plant may help to relieve itchy, dry or oily skin which, along with hair supplements, will help to improve the overall condition of the scalp. This could provide an optimal environment for new hair growth which can be achieved with the proven hair loss treatments.

If you’ve got some aloe vera growing around your house, give it a go and see if it makes your hair look healthier. Just don’t bother spending money on hair loss products that claim it can re-grow your hair.

Question: I’m confused – I’ve been on every review site on net and can’t find a bad comment about Provillus, only rival brands. All blogs come out good. Could there be something in this product that works? I just want the best. please be honest.

Confused about Hair Loss*the above question was a comment in reply to our ‘PROVILLUS – UNPROVEN FOR HAIR LOSS‘ article*

Answer: Hi Patrick. Thanks for your comment. On belgraviacentre.com we state the facts about hair loss products, we’re not looking to make negative remarks about a product for any reason other than ensuring the general public are aware of the ones that are likely the work and the ones that aren’t. If you research yourself you will see that all of our information on Provillus is completely accurate. Most of the websites that recommend Provillus either sell the product themselves or receive commission for every click they get to a website that sells the product. Unfortunately we find this causes many websites to exaggerate the effectiveness of the product they are selling. Here is a story related to HAIR LOSS PRODUCT RANKING WEBSITES that will be useful to you.

Provillus is a supplement and has similar ingredients to a number of other supplements including Procerin and Hair Vitalics. Hair Vitalics is Belgravia’s own hair loss supplement and as you will see in all of our literature about Hair Vitalics, we do not advise it as a suitable product to use alone for preventing hair loss. For hair loss prevention there are only two treatments and one device that are proven – you can find more information on the proven treatments on our hair loss treatments page.

There are products in Provillus that could help to maintain and improve the condition of the hair but there is nothing proven for hair loss prevention. Saw Palmetto is a product contained in both Provillus and Hair Vitalics that is thought to assist in the slowing of hair loss, but there is no firm evidence to say that it is effective to this cause.

Question Have you heard of Aminexil? Does it work?

Aminexil is produced by cosmetic company L'Oreal and unproven for hair lossAnswer: Aminexil is a patented chemical molecule developed by L’Oreal and is claimed to help prevent perifollicular fibrosis (scarring of the hair follicles) that has been heavily promoted as a treatment for hair loss. The company did come under a bit of fire about that because they’re a cosmetic company and not a pharmaceutical one. Still, aminexil is found in quite a few topical hair loss products, none of which have been proven or licensed for the treatment or prevention of hair loss.

Even after 15 years of independent research, aminexil is not a licensed treatment for hair loss because any medical product must have regulatory approval (such as from the MHRA (UK) or FDA (USA)) before it’s considered a safe and effective treatment. To get a medical license the manufacturer must conduct a scientific study that is statistically relevant and it must meet all of the clinical research regulations published by the regulatory bodies. Currently, there are only two products that have been licensed for the prevention of hair loss by both the MHRA and the FDA, and aminexil is not one of them.

Aminexil is said to work in a similar way to the proven hair loss treatment minoxidil. However, aminexil is often mixed with minoxidil and if it was to work to any degree it’s likely to be the minoxidil that helps and not the aminexil.

That’s not to say using aminexil will have no benefit – there isn’t any evidence to say that it doesn’t work. However, there’s also no conclusive evidence to say that it does.

If you’re scratching your head about hair loss – stop. Itching caused by dandruff can damage your hair at the scalp’s surface and result in breakage and subsequent thinning. While it may not be the root cause of your hair loss, dandruff symptoms can irritate the condition and damage the quality of your hair. However, the latest shampoo by Head & Shoulders is the solution to male hair loss, according to their International Hairstylist, Ben Skervin.

‘Hair Endurance’ is essentially an anti-dandruff shampoo but it’s giving men the impression that it will prevent hair loss. Head & Shoulders say the product is designed for men to offer relief to stressed and thinning hair and protect it against damage that could lead to breakage and further thinning.
A clean scalp is essential for healthy hair growth but shampoo won't stop hair loss
“Men often tend not to pay too much attention to caring for their hair, and will wash with harsh shampoos or even shower gels, which can do lots of damage,” Mr Skervin said. “Hair Endurance is the ideal solution for men to have great looking hair, as it addresses the issue of hair loss and damage right from the root, restoring great looking hair to men, and in turn restoring their confidence.”

It’s a bit of an exaggerated claim… Dandruff does not directly cause hair loss but the rubbing and scratching as a result of the irritation could aggravate the problem and cause further damage the condition of your hair. Hair care products that reduce scalp inflammation may help reduce the severity of the condition but you shouldn’t count on any shampoo to stop your hair loss. Male pattern baldness is primarily determined by genetics, which is why most balding men lose hair on top and still keep hair on the sides regardless of dandruff or scalp inflammation.

You should consult a hair loss specialist if excessive shedding is causing you concern because, even if you are indirectly losing more hair due to dandruff, there are many other causes which should be ruled out. Furthermore, knowing the direct cause will put you in a better position to know how to tackle the condition head on and effectively manage and control your hair loss. Just as dandruff is manageable but not curable, hair loss can be controlled with the right treatment.

Dandruff varies in severity but is formed mainly as a result of an increase in production of dead skin cells, presumably caused by a fungal colonisation when the cells divide too quickly. Itching commonly accompanies the condition which can cause further irritation but most anti-dandruff shampoos will control the situation. If the itching persists, you should consult a dermatologist to find out why.

Hair loss on the other hand also varies in severity, but, 8 times out of 10 the root cause is a genetic predisposition and no shampoo can work its magic that deep and claim to be the solution to hair loss. Of course a clean scalp is essential for healthy hair growth but to put a stop to hair fall you’ll need to speak to a hair loss specialist. Most of the time hair loss treatment involves a combination of methods to combat the condition because so many factors can influence its progress.

Hair loss and dandruff can be a nightmare but they are both cosmetic inconveniences that can be effectively overcome. Question: There are a lot of websites offering treatments that they claim work to reduce hair loss and promote hair growth. One of these products is the Bellamo Hair Laser System, and I was wondering if you could tell whether it would work or if it is a scam.

Belamo LaserAnswer: The Bellamo Hair Laser System is a relatively unknown product in the UK. Here is the information gathered after researching its website:

The device has three functions – massage the scalp, shine infra red light on the scalp, spray ‘Revital Serum’ on the scalp. There is also a shampoo to be used in conjunction with the device.

Infra Red: There is no evidence to indicate that Infra Red light assists in preventing hair loss or promoting hair growth.

Massaging the scalp: Same as above – people once believed that massaging the scalp could help to prevent hair loss but I’d say this is now generally classified as an ‘old wives tale’, similarly to standing on ones head!

Revital Serum and shampoo: These are purely natural solutions whose ingredients I have never come across. The ‘active’ ingredient is Bellamo’s patented product, ‘MS 13’ as well as other natural ‘oriental herbs’. There isn’t much information disclosed but this product can safely be classified as one of the many unproven products that has no evidence to say that it assists in preventing hair loss. There is no evidence of any clinical efficacy for this product on the Bellamo website.

So there is nothing within Bellamo’s ‘Hair Laser Revital System’ that actually has any efficacy for the prevention of hair loss. The cost is £295.

A treatment programme consisting primarily of the medically proven, FDA approved treatments (of which there are only three), will ensure optimum chances of hair loss stabilisation and hair regrowth. For more information on these treatments, and how you can get the best out of them you can CONTACT US with any questions you may have, or to arrange a free hair loss consultation, or complete our ONLINE DIAGNOSTIC FORM following which you will be contacted by a Belgravia treatment advisor who will inform you of the best treatment options for you.

Question: I damaged my hair from bleaching it too much, so decided to cut it very short. But it doesn’t seem to be growing back properly, I think I am going bald. I want to try Nioxin but don’t know which one is best because they have many different products (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8). Which one is most suitable? I would also like to buy a scalp treatment such as Follicle Booster but want to know which one would be best to make my hair grow back stronger and thicker like before. Please help!

NioxinAnswer: I have had a scan through the Nioxin website and read through their different ‘systems’ (1 to 8) which are currently available (at the time of writing, March 2009). As with all other hair loss supplements, there is no evidence that any of these products will individually help to prevent hair loss.  We always advise trying the clinically-proven treatments as a first port of call, as these are the products most likely to be effective.

This approach may save you time and money experimenting with what can often essentially be haircare products that provide a temporary boost to how the hair looks, rather than addressing the underlying reasons for the condition. Haircare products can be used in addition to established hair loss treatments but, used on their own, they are unlikely to have much more than a temporary cosmetic effect – particularly if you have a genetic hair loss condition.

The proven treatments are Finasteride 1mg (men only),  Minoxidil and the HairMax LaserComb when recommended combinations are used correctly, and with supplementary hair growth supporting products integrated as desired, many users will experience some degree of hair regrowth and almost all will stop losing their hair.

In order to receive an accurate hair loss diagnosis – so we know what is causing your shedding and, from there, can provide effective treatment recommendations – you can have a free consultation with one of our hair specialists in person at Belgravia’s City of London or Central London hair loss clinics. Alternatively, if you are not based in or near London, you can complete an online consultation form here on the website, following which you will be contacted by one of our experienced treatment advisors who will go over your course recommendations with you.

A note about the following question and answer: This is a perfect example of the unfortunate truth about a large segment of the hair loss industry in the UK (and probably the rest of the world). We have encountered a prime example on the internet of the fraudulent tactics so frequently used to sell a product marketed for hair loss prevention.

Question: Hi, has anyone ever heard of Stimuhair? I read about it on healthwatch.info. Is the site genuine or is it a promotional site for Stimuhair?

Stimuhair ScamAnswer: Stimuhair is the product being promoted on healthwatch.info. After carrying out some research, I have found that healthwatch.info (the website in question), herbalmagician.com (the website selling the product) and stimuhair.com (the website of the product itself) are all registered to the same person. I found this out by searching whois.net. No surprise to me after reading the website’s message, which is mostly fabricated or exaggerated.

The website talks about minoxidil, saying it doesn’t work for hair regrowth and side effects are high. All of the information about minoxidil is vastly exaggerated or simply untrue – you can find legitimate and accurate information about minoxidil on our MINOXIDIL page. It’s the only proven hair loss treatment for men and women and is FDA approved following extensive and recognised clinical trials, with a very low rate of mild side effects.

There are also a number of other comments throughout the passage aimed at turning people off other products and services for hair loss, that eventually lead to the promotion of their own product.

Stimuhair is an unproven product and the website’s approach to selling their product is highly unethical as I’m sure is clear to most from reading the information provided. I’d say Stimuhair’s approach epitomises the term ‘hard-sell’ and is something that any hair loss sufferer needs to be aware of when searching for a hair loss solution.

Hair Loss Treatment for Men and Hair Growth Boosters - Belgravia CentreOn Belgravia’s website and in our literature we often talk about ‘hair growth boosters’, but what exactly are hair growth boosters?

These are an integral part of Belgravia’s effective treatment programmes for hair loss and are one of the reason’s why Belgravia’s treatment regimes are superior to most other treatment options available.

As you may notice, we spend more time dwelling on the licensed and medically proven hair loss treatments, which are the basis to most of Belgravia’s treatment courses.

However, here we introduce you to each of Belgravia’s hair growth boosters, and explain why they play such a vital part Belgravia’s treatment courses for both men and women.

HairMax LaserBand 41 hair growth LLLT device buy from The Belgravia Centre hair loss clinic LondonHairMax LaserBand devices

The LaserBand devices are the newest FDA-cleared low-level light therapy (LLLT) delivery systems for hair growth. LLLT is the only hair loss product other than Finasteride 1mg and Minoxidil that has shown significant evidence that it can assist in encouraging hair growth and preventing hair loss.  It has a different mechanism to both Finasteride 1mg and Minoxidil, meaning that you are tackling hair loss from a different angle, adding to the effectiveness of the treatment combination. The HairMax LaserComb was the first ever home-use LLLT device to have been ‘FDA cleared’ for hair loss in men and women, following successful clinical testing in the USA. FDA clearance is similar to FDA approval, but for a device as opposed to a medicine. The LaserBand 41 and LaserBand 82 devices are the latest innovations based on the original LaserBand technology. They employ photobiostimulation technology via medical-grade lasers to stimulate the follicles at a cellular level, which HairMax advises improves hair growth, hair strength and reverses hair thinning. The company also claims a 93% success rate for these ergonomic devices which are used for 90 seconds (LaserBand 82) to three minutes (LaserBand 41), three times per week.

Hair Vitalics is Belgravia’s exclusive hair growth supplement, produced and developed exclusively by the Belgravia pharmacy hair growth experts in Men’s and Women’s formulations. Both Hair Vitalics for Men and Hair Vitalics for Women contain a number of vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are thought to help with the condition of the hair and assist in promoting healthy hair growth. There is no firm evidence to suggest that any supplement for hair loss will individually assist in the prevention or reversal of hair loss but we find Hair Vitalics works superbly as a hair growth ‘booster’ and improves the results achieved from proven hair loss treatments.

Hair Vitalics is available for £25 for a 1 month supply, or £10 off when purchasing a 3 month supply, 1 free box when purchasing a 6 month supply or 3 free boxes when ordering a 12 month supply. Belgravia patients can purchase these alongside almost all Belgravia’s hair loss treatment courses. Non-clients are able to buy online directly from hairvitalics.com

MPG / Azelaic Acid / Caffeine

MPG, azelaic acid and caffeine are potentially beneficial ingredients which can be added to Minoxidil. These products are added with the aim of helping to block DHT, which is the product that destroys hair follicles in both men and women. These products are particularly beneficial for women, who are unable to use Finasteride 1mg. As with all unproven products, MPG and Azelaic Acid are not recommended as an individual solution to hair loss.

Belgravia Centre Shampoo and Conditioner Hair Care RangeAlso available, and usually included in Belgravia’s hair loss treatment programmes, are specially formulated shampoos, conditioners, and scalp products which are designed to maintain the condition of the hair and help to clear up certain scalp complaints such as dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Results of a five-month clinical trial of a new hair loss product released by a small biotechnology firm appear promising but researchers say it’s early stages and the trial is currently still in progress, which means another effective hair loss treatment may be years away, if at all.

The current hair loss treatments  that prove successful are so because they’ve been through years of controlled, clinical trials to demonstrate how they work and their results. They are then subject to approval by the FDA and licensing by the MHRA – the regulatory bodies in the US and UK, respectively, that are responsible for granting licenses to new drugs so they can be sold publicly – before they are deemed not only effective, but also safe to use. There are currently two hair loss treatments that have  have demonstrated continuously good results.

Histogen, an 18-person company which opened in 2007, is excited about the initial results from their independent study which involved 25 men aged 18 to 45 with varying stages of male pattern baldness.

“These results appear to be phenomenal, although this trial is still in the very early stages,” Dr Craig Ziering, the principal investigator of the study said.

Hair Loss TreatmentWhilst there are no published results and the trial is still on-going, Histogen has reported that they are planning to meet with the FDA.

The formula, called ReGenica, was developed using man-man fibroblasts and early stem-cells, grown in an environment that mimics embryonic conditions. The fibroblasts are thought to cause certain proteins, named WNT proteins, to be produced. In mice, WNT has been shown to be responsible for initiating the formation of new hair follicles and improving function in existing follicles.

Histogen had previously conducted independent research that suggested ReGenica stimulated hair growth in animals. The current trial is to test the products safety in humans.

“Histogen’s clinical trial was designed to assess the safety of its product over a five month period,” Dr. Ziering said. “In addition to seeing no adverse reactions, we were delighted to see more hair, thicker hair shafts, and what appears to be the growth of completely new hair follicles in the areas that received the ReGenica treatment.”

The trial is ongoing but Histogen expects to release full results from this first clinical study in the first half of 2009.

There are hundreds of hair loss treatments and products currently available to the public but there remain only three which have the FDA’s tick of approval. Experimentation with products that are not clinically proven or supported by medical bodies may not only be a waste of time and money, but potentially unsafe. We will await further information regarding Histogen.

Minoxidil 5% Success RatesMinoxidil is the most effective topical solution for hair loss. There are many alternative topical solutions marketed for hair loss, but no others that are medically proven, or approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) as minoxidil is.

To get the best out of minoxidil, which takes only a minute or two to apply each day, it’s best to combine it with one or more of the mediclly proven treatments and certain ‘boosters’ that will maximise response.

The Belgravia Centre is the UK’s leading hair loss clinic and pharmacy, and produces its own formulations of minoxidil with added boosters that help to block DHT (the fundamental cause of hair loss) locally around the scalp.
