The Sheriff’s Court in Perth has heard an unusual case involving a butcher who caused a road traffic collision by driving on the wrong side of the road. One of the passengers in the other car suffered significant hair loss as a result of the collision.
According to the fiscal depute prosecuting the case, the woman involved “had stress-related ailments subsequently, one of which was Alopecia.”
As the case demonstrates, hair loss can be caused by a number of unusual factors, from diet to hair styling regime to stress. For the individual experiencing unexpected hair loss, the discovery of a clogged plughole or receding hair line can add additional stress - further exacerbating the issue.
In the case of the woman involved in the accident, her hair loss was diagnosed as Alopecia Areata, a condition which sees the immune system attack the person’s hair follicles, causing their hair to fall out. Alopecia Areata can manifest as a single bald spot, or can develop to near total baldness depending on the severity of the case.
Scientists also believe a second condition known as Telogen Effluvium can also be caused by traumatic stress. Telogen Effluvium often results in delayed hair loss beginning three months after the conclusion of the stressful event which is both confusing and shocking for the person involved.
Telogen Effluvium is caused by adrenaline, a hormone released by the body to cope with stress, causing hair follicles to enter a natural ‘resting’ state. When follicles go into this state, also known as ‘telogen’, the attached hair falls out. Fortunately, hair lost through Telogen Effluvium tends to grow back of its own accord.
Both Telogen Effluvium and Alopecia Areata require a proper diagnosis from a suitably qualified hair loss expert before treatment can begin. Experts will take a medical history from patients before carefully assessing the symptoms presented. At that point, the hair loss expert will be able to create a custom treatment plan to help prevent further hair loss and promote regrowth. In the case of the woman involved in the car accident, her treatment plan is likely to have involved the use of Minoxidil, a clinically-approved medication proven to promote hair regrowth.
