Car Accident Causes Woman’s Hair to Fall Out

The Sheriff’s Court in Perth has heard an unusual case involving a butcher who caused a road traffic collision by driving on the wrong side of the road. One of the passengers in the other car suffered significant hair loss as a result of the collision.

According to the fiscal depute prosecuting the case, the woman involved “had stress-related ailments subsequently, one of which was Alopecia.”

Stress related hair loss

Scientists also believe a second condition known as Telogen Effluvium can also be caused by traumatic stress. Telogen Effluvium often results in delayed hair loss beginning three months after the conclusion of the stressful event which is both confusing and shocking for the person involved.

Telogen Effluvium is caused by adrenaline, a hormone released by the body to cope with stress, causing hair follicles to enter a natural ‘resting’ state. When follicles go into this state, also known as ‘telogen’, the attached hair falls out. Fortunately, hair lost through Telogen Effluvium tends to grow back of its own accord.

Treating stress-related hair loss

Both Telogen Effluvium and Alopecia Areata require a proper diagnosis from a suitably qualified hair loss expert before treatment can begin.
