Question: I just started using hair loss treatments because my hair's thinning on top. Am I ok to use suncream on my head if I'm using minoxidil?
Answer: Hi Cy. Absolutely. You can use sun cream on your scalp after applying minoxidil as long as you wait around an hour between using this hair loss treatment and applying the suncream. You don't mention which type of minoxidil you use - liquid, foam or cream - but rest assured, this advice applies to all formulas.
When you're getting ready to go out, if you apply the minoxidil to dry hair and scalp as usual first, then go about your regular morning routine, by the time you've had a cup of coffee and brushed your teeth you should be fine to apply a sunscreen to your scalp. If this is not something you do regularly - for instance if you are only planning on using the sun cream on your scalp for a short period of time, whilst on holiday for a week or so for example, then you can wait for less time if necessary - ideally no shorter period than half an hour though - without having to worry too much, as long as this is only temporary.
Whilst we don't recommend a particular brand, the best formula to look for in sun protection for your scalp is one that is non-greasy and ideally non-comedogenic (doesn't clog hair follicles). Also make sure you use a sun cream that offers a high level of both UVA and UVB protection - when it comes to the SPF, the higher the better given the top of the head is so exposed to the elements.
If you have any concerns, wearing a cap or hat is still the most effective way of protecting your scalp from the sun and the method we tend to recommend to prevent sunburn.
