‘Can the DHT that Causes Male Hair Loss Also Affect Women? ‘

HairlossANSWERS - Click to Submit Your Query to Our Hair Loss Experts

Name: Em

Question: I understand the effects that DHT has on men’s hair but can it also cause hair loss problems for women?

Answer: Hi, Em. Yes, a sensitivity to DHT is responsible for causing hair loss in both men and women who have an active predisposition towards androgenic alopecia. This hereditary condition is more commonly known as Male Pattern Baldness in men and Female Pattern Hair Loss in women, and also displays slightly differently for each gender.

DHT only attacks the hair follicles located around the top of the head, leading those affected to produce increasingly weaker, thinning hair. In men this tends to present in distinct areas, such as a thinning crown or as a receding hairline, although general thinning on top is also common.

In women, however, a more even thinning around the top of the head and at the temples is more likely, as can be seen in the Month 1 ‘before’ images taken from our Female Hair Loss Treatment Success Stories gallery, pictured here.

Also, whilst this shedding may lead to eventual baldness in men, this is rare in women who tend to develop severe thinning which is particularly noticeable at the parting, if the condition is left unchecked.

For those who want to try to retain their hair, there is a clinically-proven, MHRA and FDA approved women’s hair loss treatment, known as minoxidil, which can help to stabilise this type of thinning.

Belgravia offers a range of high strength minoxidil products which, especially when combined with recommended hair growth boosters, can prevent further hair loss and aid the regrowth process. Many of our female pattern hair loss clients experience significant regrowth results from following Belgravia’s highly-targeted treatment plans featuring these types of components and personally tailored to each individual’s specific needs by a hair loss specialist nurse.

Hi Richa, this is common in cases where there has been an underlying medical issue and can last until around three months after this is under control and being properly managed. The condition's name is Chronic Telogen Effluvium though we would recommend having a professional confirm this as we cannot provide a diagnosis without assessing her. If this is the case, however, her hair should regrow naturally. Whilst treatment is available, it is only suitable for those aged 16 and over.
