Brits are known for their lackadaisical attitude to wearing sun cream, whatever the red-faced (and potentially dangerous) consequences. So, it seems natural that many people will be wondering whether sunburn on the scalp will cause hair loss.
Of course this is an issue that is especially important to those people who have thin hair on the top of their heads – the area affected by Male Pattern Baldness and Female Pattern Hair Loss – or wear their hair in a short style. So, in short, the answer is no, sunburn cannot cause hair loss. It may cause your scalp to itch as it goes through the healing process, and for some skin to peel off, but hairloss will generally not occur as a result.
If you’re noticing hair loss and sunburn on your scalp, when you previously have not been bothered by this, the situation may be the other way round: your hair loss has caused more scalp to be more visible, which as a result has caused sunburn.
If this may be the case, you should take a closer look at the hair atop your head, do you have the beginnings of a thinning crown? Or does your hair seem less dense generally? It may be that male pattern hair loss has begun. A trip to a hair loss specialist can confirm your diagnosis, and a hairloss treatment plan can address the issue.
Protect Your Scalp
Male pattern hair loss occurs when a genetic predisposition to DHT sensitivity is expressed. DHT is a powerful androgen hormone that causes follicular miniaturisation atop the scalp, meaning that thinner, weaker hair is grown in the place of the previous healthy strands.
However, rather than allowing hair to thin until the area becomes shiny, bald, and highly susceptible to sunburn (at which point the shedding cannot be treated medically) a hair loss treatment programme can not only halt hair loss, but regrow hair.
There are two medications that have been licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA for treating hair loss. Propecia, the first of these, in an oral tablet that blocks DHT. The second, minoxidil, is a vasodilator which stimulates hair regrowth. Belgravia carries a selection of high strength minoxidil preparations which are suitable for treating thinning hair and areas of stubborn hair loss, such as a receding hairline or thinning crown.
If you’re unsure what exactly is causing your hair loss, or if you’re fairly sure and want a hair loss specialist to confirm your diagnosis and recommend a bespoke treatment plan, a free consultation at Belgravia is in order. As well as offering the above medications, we are also able to provide a variety of hair growth boosters as part of your treatment plan, which ensure all round scalp and hair health.
